Major environmental issues
On March29, 2013, the 65 year old
ExxonMobil Pegasus Pipeline ruptured
beneath a subdivision in Mayflower,
Arkansas, soaking lawns and streets with
an estimated 210,000 gallons of heavy
toxic tar sands crude. For Mayflower's
2,200 residents, the existence of a pipeline
running under their homes (and partially
through the watershed that provides water
to 400,000 people) came as a shock.
QUALITY ASSURANCE Considered QUALITY
a "major CONTROL
spill" by the EPA, it
sickened hundreds of residents and
exposed them to known carcinogens like
benzene and to hydrogen sulfide, which
causes respiratory illnesses.
Who Suffers:
Groundwater, people, wildlife.

Major environmental issues

Food waste in Abu Dhabi accounts for 55

per cent of all household waste, placing
huge pressure on local landfills. The
amount of food waste that goes to landfill
in the UAE could be significantly reduced if
more people used food-disposal machines
in their homes.
According to Dubai Municipality, 1,850
tones of food waste is thrown away each

performance
- Management commitment and employee engagement

public image, achieving strategic objectives, and integrating with business
management systems
- Supplier environmental performance

Principles used to develop ISO 14001:2015
The principles used to develop ISO 14001:2015 is “Three pillars of sustainability”

Social : This pillar supports initiatives like peace,

social justice, reducing poverty, and other grassroots
movements that promote social equity.

Environmental : This pillar supports initiatives like:

renewable energy, reducing fossil fuel consumption
and emissions, sustainable agriculture and fishing,
organic farming, tree planting and reducing
deforestation, recycling, and better waste
management.

Economic : We need a sustainable economic model

that ensures fair distribution and efficient allocation
of our resources. This pillar ensures that our
economic growth maintains a healthy balance with
our ecosystem.

Concept of risk based thinking

10 TUV ME│EMS 001 - ISO 14001:2015 Awareness Training │ REVISION 01│ ISSUE DATE 29.12.2015
Risk management
▪ Risk definition

Risk
Effect of uncertainty on an expected result

Note 1: An effect is deviation from expected – positive or

negative

Note 2: Uncertainty is the state, even partial, of deficiency of

information related to, understanding or knowledge of, an
event, its consequence, or likelihood

Note 3: Risk is often expressed in terms of a combination of

the consequences of an event and the associated likelihood
occurrence
Ref.: ISO DIS 14001:2015

Risk management
▪ Reason for risk based thinking (as per ISO)

• Improve customer satisfaction and

confidence
• Assure consistency of quality of the
product
Reason • Establish pro-active culture of prevention
and improvement
• Successful companies intuitively take a
risk-based approach
