General Objective

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

Identify equipment and machines used by scientist and Astronauts.

Specific Objective
Students should be able to:
1. State some of the machines and equipment used by scientist and astronauts to explore the
universe.
2. Draw and label equipment used by scientist and astronauts after presentation.
3. Explain how a spacecraft and satellites operates after class discussion.

Teaching Methodology:
1. Textbook: Investigating Science for Jamaica.
TEACHING METHODS
1. Explanation: Teacher will explain concept –equipment used by scientist to explore the
universe.
2. Discussions: Both teacher and students will discuss ways in which scientist explore the
universe.
3. Questions and Answers: Students will answer questions related to the topic.
4. Students will watch a documentary about space exploration which will be used to
enhance the teaching and learning process for the lesson.

CONTENT SUMMARY
Humans have invented rockets which go so fast that they can shoot through the atmosphere into

space where there is no air.

Manmade objects which we put into space using rockets to orbit the earth are called satellites.

The first spacecraft was launched by Russea in1957.

Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin were the first men to travel to the moon in 1969

Introductory Activity
This lesson will be introduced with the questions. What is space exploration?
What are some equipment that humans have invented to learn about the universe and the earth
resources?

Developmental Activity/ Procedure of lesson

Week 1 Class 1
 A discussion will take place on some of the equipment invented by scientist to explore
the universe.
 Students will watch a documentary on space exploration.
 Teacher will ask students question from the content discussed in the documentary.

Week 1 Class 2

 A video will be shown to the students on how a rocket is built.


 Pictures of different types of rockets will be on display in the class.
 In groups of 4 students will be given a class project to design their own rocket on
cartridge paper.

Week 1 Class 3

• Pictures of other equipment used by scientist will be on display. Including the different types
of telescope,Satallites and spacesuit.
Students will be asked to draw some of these equipment on cartridge paper.
Namely: Telescopes and rockets.

Week 2 Class 1

The lesson will be introduced with a video on living in space which will state some of the
possibilities and limitations of living in space.Students will record important points in their
notebooks.

Week 2 Class 2

Students will watch a video on life inside a space craft.


Students will also go through notes in the textbook on page160.After which they will answer
questions on space exploration.

Week 3 Class 3
Revision of the entire topic of space exploration will be done.
Students will be given a worksheet to answer question from the topic.
