THERMODYNAMICS

2.) Between a boiling pot of water and a gigantic iceberg, the gigantic iceberg contains
the most heat. At first thought, most of us, if not all, would think that the boiling pot of
water contains the most heat because it has a hotter temperature as compared to the
iceberg. But, that is not the case. Heat energy depends on the speed of the particles,
the number of particles (the size or mass), and the type of particles in an object.
Basically, temperature does not depend on the size or type of an object. Even objects
that are cold, like icebergs, can contain more internal energy than smaller objects of
higher temperature like a boiling pot of water. In this case, the iceberg is far bigger than
the boiling pot of water which means that it contains more internal energy and its
molecules contains large amount of heat and kinetic energy.

Heat is undeniably important in our lives. It greatly impacts our daily living from
the warmth of heat brought by the sun, to the electricity that flows from the coils
powering up our gadgets and appliances. Almost every aspect of our life is
stupendously influenced by heat and its various processes, taking its part in maintaining
the life and equilibrium of our environment. The process of photosynthesis, which is
important in plants, involves the use of heat which comes from the sun. In plants, light
energy from the sun is being converted to heat energy and gets trapped in the leaves to
form carbohydrates. Heat is also important in the drying process, not only of our clothes
but others as well, such as drying of several food products. Sun’s heat helps in drying
clothes, soil, and any other wet surfaces. In addition, heat is also vital in cooking.
Cooking is a daily routine at home. Heat transfer during cooking renders the food
material and fiber more soft and pulpy. We can’t cook our food without the use of heat.
Moreover, the melting and molding of metals, uses the power of heat as well. Metals are
the hardest substances that are used widely for building, vehicles, hardware, etc. These
metals cannot be molded with the application of pressure. But hey can be molded easily
if heated. Furthermore, the conversion of heat into electricity, may it be in solar (from
the sun) or geothermal (from the interior of the earth) is significant in running the whole
globe. It brings light to every home and ease to every person. Without electricity, we
can’t use our mobile phones and other gadgets/appliances as well. In addition,
sterilization, which is a process to kill any microbes in drugs and other healthcare
material uses heat as well. This aims to keep the preparation, sterile until use. So heat
sterilization is the most common and highly effective method. Heat also drives our
vehicles. All the vehicles which run on petrol and coal operate due to the generation of
heat energy within. The heat energy helps the pistons to move, which is conveyed into
cyclic motion, and thus, the wheels rotate. The more the heat generated, the more the
speed and strength of the movement. Moreover, heat is also vital in enzyme reactions,
which serves as a catalyst in speeding up the chemical reactions that are happening
inside our body. Another scenario where we can see the importance of heat is the water
cycle. The water cycle is a phenomenon responsible for the rain and life on earth. When
the heat from the sun contacts water on the earth, it evaporates by forming water vapor.
This evaporation which mostly happens from the oceans to form the clouds. These
vaporous clouds, in turn, reach the land through the sky, get cooled, and cause rains.
The rainwater collects in pools, ponds, rivers, etc. and the excess returns to seas and
ocean. Heat is often used in the medical field as well. The heat is used as a simple yet
effective way to manage the pain and the joint or muscular stiffness. The deep and
penetrating heat does not only relieve the pain but also it enhances the recovery
process. These are only some of the importance and uses of heat. Stating these facts, I
can clearly say that heat cannot be completely obliterated in our lives.

The movie entitled “Apocalypse Pompeii” which was released on 2014 revolves
on the story of an American tourist together with her daughter who went on a holiday
trip in Italy. A supposed to be exciting trip suddenly turned into a dark nightmare when
they experienced a horrible disaster when Mount Vesuvius unexpectedly erupts. When
her husband who happened to be a former Special Forces commando knew what had
happened, he gathered his old buddies to join him on a rescue mission.

The film features the havoc brought about by the eruption of volcanoes. It is
undeniably true that it can end the lives and can destroy the property of the people living
near the volcano. The health of every individual is also at risk, as it attacks the
respiratory system of every person by releasing toxic smoke.

The actors and actresses in the movie were really devoted in their respective
parts and roles in making the film look realistic and true. I was moved and touched by
their acting skills. They are a good story teller and they know how to act well in each
scenario.

When it comes to the special effects that were used in the film, I can clearly say
that due to the fact that it is an old film, it is not advanced as compared to the special
effects being used in our modern times. The camera angles and the lighting effects in
the movie were also good, to the point that you can really see the faces of the actors
and actresses in each scene of the film.

I would like to commend the whole production for producing such an eye-opening
film. I would like to commend the editor of the film as well because it is quite obvious
that he/she was really creative and skillful in terms of adding effects, transitions, and
animations. Furthermore, the use of appropriate sound effects really add color and
spice to the overall film.

If I will rate the movie from 1-10 stars I will give it 7 stars and a thumbs up. I have
considered as well, the date and year when was the movie released. Since it is an old
film, the quality is not laudable as compared to the movies we have at the present. But
over-all, it was a good film.
