that interest you and the person to whom you are writing. Parts of a Friendly Letter 1. Heading – usually placed in the upper right- hand section of the letter. It contains your own street address in the first line and your town or city, state, and ZIP code in the second. Also included, in the third line of the heading, is the date that the letter was written. 2. Salutation (or greeting) – is placed below the heading on the left-hand side of the page. The salutation of a friendly letter usually begins with the word “Dear,” followed by the name of the person to whom you are writing. A comma follows the salutation. 3. Body – is placed under the salutation. It can be of any length and can contain any information you want to send. 4. Closing – is placed in the lower right-hand section of the letter, beneath the body. The first word of a closing is always capitalized, but the other words in the closing are usually not capitalized. A comma is placed at the end. A closing may be slightly formal, casual, or affectionate. The closing you choose will depend upon your relationship with the person to whom you are writing. Examples: Sincerely yours, Best wishes, Yours truly, Love, Very truly yours, Your friend, 5. Signature – the last part of a friendly letter, is placed beneath the closing. Again depending upon your relationship with the recipient of the letter, you may choose to sign your full name, your first name only, or a nickname. Your signature should be written in ink, even if you have typed the rest of the letter.
