A BASIC MOVE FOR THE MASKS RPG

This basic move can be used in any game of MASKS for even more drama and angst!
The prompts focus the story on challenges that the heroes face when forming
romantic bonds. It’s based on the Smitten move from my game THIRSTY SWORD

CATCH FEELINGS
Whenever you develop a crush on somebody, say why, give them Influence over you, and answer the
question corresponding to your playbook:

BEACON Why will you never be in the same league as them?

BULL What do they have going for them that your current love lacks?
BRAIN Who would be a more logical partner for them?
DELINQUENT Why would they hold you back?
DOOMED Besides your Doom, how would you ruin their life if you were with them?
HARBINGER Why did they break up with you in another timeline?
JANUS What part of you are you most afraid to show them?
JOINED Why would pursuing them either betray or spite your other half?
What comment from your older self haunts you every time you think
INNOCENT about your crush?
LEGACY Why would the members of your legacy never approve?
How does your crush conflict with what you think you know about the
NEWBORN world?
NOMAD Why are you certain your relationship would never last?
NOVA Who would try to protect them from getting close with you?
OUTSIDER What human romantic ritual do you most struggle with?
PROTEGE Why would your mentor disapprove of them?
REFORMED How do you think you would change them for the worse?
SCION Would your villain parent try to recruit them or eliminate them?*
How would pursuing them conflict with the orders or regulations of your
SOLDIER organization?
STAR How would pursuing them conflict with what your fans want?
What makes you worry that they want your body to be different from the
TRANSFORMED way you want it?
You don’t have to say anything in-character. Do tell the other players so that they understand what
your character is experiencing and can fuel juicy drama around it. Some questions are ambiguous;
interpret them however you wish.
Developing a crush is always the player’s choice. No mechanic can force you to resolve this move.
If you’re playing a custom playbook not in this list, pick the question that would give you the most
tasty angst.
* If the Scion’s parent is not featured in the game, ask instead: Who would think poorly of you or your
crush if you pursued a relationship?
