6 High-performance waxes for the plastics industry

Resin Manufacturers
Polymers’ melt and flow rheology characteristics can be improved
with Clariant’s Licowax® and Licocene® polymeric waxes. The
Licomont® saponified montan waxes are used in many grades of
both polyamides and polyesters to nucleate them for faster cycle
times at the customers’ plants. Specialty Ceridust® grades may
also be used as gas cell nucleators when discrete cell structure and
faster hardening times are needed in specialty foamed polymers too.

Compounders
Our advanced wax additives add value to all sorts of plastics
compounds. The Licowax® and Licocare® solutions enable
faster cycle times, smoother surfaces, better dispersion and
higher shaping flexibility by improving polymer melt flow and
the mold release of plastic parts. In thermoplastic composites,
the use of Clariant’s solutions, such as MAH grafted Licocene®,
can positively influence surface and mechanical properties.

Recyclers
We support recyclers of post-consumer or post-industrial
plastics with our broad portfolio by helping to meet typical
needs like flow improvement or compatibilization of
inhomogeneous waste streams (e. g. PE & PP). Selected
Licocene®, Licowax® or Licotas® grades are recommended.

8 High-performance waxes for the plastics industry

AUTOMOTIVE
Lowering the weight of vehicles and thus reducing fuel consumption or
extending the range of e-cars is a major objective of the automotive industry.
This objective can be achieved by replacing metals with plastics. Often,
those exterior or under-the-hood plastics parts are reinforced with
fibers or fillers. Clariant’s coupling agents Licocene® PP MA 6452 and
Licocene® PP MA 7452 support the compatibilization of polypropylene
(PP) and fibers/fillers to achieve desired mechanical properties.

BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION

Proper thermal insulation is known as one of the most effective
ways of reducing the energy demands of buildings while reducing
greenhouse gas emissions at once. Clariant’s Licocene® PE 4201
is an excellent gas cell nucleator for insulating materials such as
expanded polystyrene (EPS).

ELECTRICS AND ELECTRONICS

Electronic devices and their components are getting smaller and
smaller. In order to empower the manufacturing of thinner-walled
parts with more difficult melt flow paths, Clariant’s bio-based
Licocare® RBW Vita or its traditional montan waxes (Licowax® and
Licomont®) are the right choice. The cycle times in many grades
of nylon and polyester may be improved by the nucleating effect
of our specialty waxes too.

PACKAGING
Clariant’s Licocene® grades, Licowax® PE 520, Ceridust® 3620
or Ceridust® 6050 M are polyolefin waxes that allow excellent
coloration of plastics packaging, such as caps and closures of
consumer care bottles, at favorable economics. Our solutions based
on renewable feedstock, e. g. Licocare® RBW Vita, or Licolub® FA 1,
are very suitable additives for biopolymer-based packaging solutions.

OTHERS
In addition, our wax additives go into a wide range of other
industries: agriculture, furniture, medical, sports or textile
just to name a few.

Lubricants

Internal Lubrication
Wax is compatible with the selected polymer, due to its polarity and chemical functionality, which
helps improve melt flow, by reducing the internal friction and entanglement of polymer chains in the
molten state when processing.

External Lubrication
Wax functions as an external lubricating film layer between the polymer (if of a different polarity) and
the hot metallic surfaces to prevent the polymer melt from adhering to the machine parts, providing a
smooth surface quality.

Dispersion Aids

Undispersed pigments and fillers interrupt a smooth polymer flow and cause an increase in filter
pressure. This increase in pressure may cause an increase in temperature and shear which may
damage pigments or fillers and cause color shifts. Properly formulated waxes wet out pigments and
fillers which reduces agglomerates and hence lowers incidence of undesirable pressure increase.
Uniform dispersion leads to optimal color yield and stronger mechanical properties.

Our amorphous Licocene grades are also used as very effective carriers for highly-loaded masterbatches.
Key products are Licocene PP 1302, Licocene PP 1502, Licocene PP 1602, Licocene PP 2602 and
