March 8, 2018

I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. illustrate the measure of position: Percentile for grouped data
2. calculate a specified measure of Percentile position of a set data
3. interpret the measure of position: Percentile for grouped data

II. Subject Matter

MEASURE OF POSITION: PERCENTILE FOR GROUPED DATA
Textbook: Mathematics Learner’s Guide for Grade 10
Reference: Elementary Statistics (MSU-IIT)
Materials: Calculator, visual aids, marker, chalkboard, chalk and activity sheets
Values: Collaboration and active participation
Ideas: Percentiles are those values that divide the total frequency into 100 equal parts.
Skills: Calculating, interpreting, critical thinking and problem solving

III. Procedure
A. Learning Activities
Teacher’s Activity Student Activity
A. Preliminary Activities
■ Everybody stand for a prayer (Someone will lead the prayer)
■ Good Morning class. ▪ Good Morning Ma’am Rizalie.
▪ Good Morning Ma’am Almera.
■ Please sit down.
■ Is there any absent? ▪ None ma’am.
■ Post your group assignment on the board (post the FDT of their masses)
and let us check it.

49-53 9 48.5 34

54-58 1 53.5 35

59-63 1 58.5 36

■ So this is our FDT. Let us reserve this table

because we will use this later.

B. Motivation
▪ Do you want to play a game? ▪ Yes ma’am.
▪ So now, I want you to group yourselves into (students are forming their groups)
6 groups, with atleast 8 members per group.
▪ Do you have your group now? ▪ Yes ma’am.
▪ Are you familiar with “Bet on your Baby”? ▪ Of course ma’am.
▪ Now, we are going to play it. But we will
change it into “Bet on your classmates”.
▪ Are you excited? ▪ Yes ma’am. We are very excited ma’am.
Instructions:
✓ This game is like a guessing game.
✓ You will have 4 choices per questions.
✓ I will only read the question twice.
✓ The group/s with the highest score will
be given an award.
✓ You will only have 30 seconds to answer
the questions per item.
Questions:
1. How many percent of your classmates’ 0% B. 50%  C. 60% D. 70%
heights got 159.5 cm. and below?
2. How many percent of your classmates’
favorite number from 1-100 that is 72 A. 90%  B. 80% C. 60% D. 40%
and below?
3. How many percent of your classmates’ A. 25 % B. 50% C. 75%  D. 80%
mass got 49.6kg and below?

▪ What have you observed from our activity ▪ There are percents ma’am.
class? Especially in the choices class, what
have you observed?
▪ That’s right.
▪ So now, based on our activity class, what do ▪ About percent ma’am?
you think is our topic for today?
▪ Okay. What if you relate percent to the ▪ Percentile ma’am.
measures of position, what word can you
think class?
▪ Correct!

▪ Before we proceed with our discussion class, At the end of the lesson, we should be able
let us read first our goal for this morning. to:
1. illustrate the measure of position:
Percentile for grouped data
2. calculate a specified measure of
Percentile position of a set data
3. interpret the measure of position:
Percentile for grouped data

C. Developmental Activities
son Proper
▪ We already have discussed quartiles and
deciles in grouped data.
▪ This time, we are going to discuss the 3rd
measure of position for grouped data, and ▪ Percentile ma’am.
that is…?
▪ Yes that’s right.
▪ Now I have here a definition.
▪ Percentile are the ninety-nine score points
w/c divide a distribution into one hundred
equal parts so that each point represents
1/100 of the data set. They are used to
characterize values according to the
percentage below them..
▪ Knowing the formulas of Quartiles and We already know that below are the formulas
Deciles of grouped data class, what do you for Quartiles and Deciles of grouped data
think is the formula for Percentiles of respectively;
grouped data?

So, I think for percentile;

▪ That’s right. Very good.

▪ The kth percentile, denoted by Pk, is

computed as follows:

where:
LB = lower boundary of the kth percentile class.
N = total frequency
= cumulative frequency before the
percentile class
= frequency of the percentile class
= size of class interval
k = nth percentile where
n = 1 ,2 ,3 , .... ,97 ,98 ,99 and 100

▪ Now, let us have an example.

▪ Going back to the FDT that your group had
created. Let’s solve for P75. Solution:
class
(f) (LB) (<cf) Step 1: Find the position of P75.
interval
34-38 5 33.5 5

39-43 7 38.5 12
Step 2: Provide the needed information.
44-48 13 43.5 25 LB = 48.5
N = 36
49-53 9 48.5 34 cfb  = 25

54-58 1 53.5 35 =9
i = 5
59-63 1 58.5 36
Step 3: Substitute the information to the
formula of percentile and simplify.

Step 4: Interpretation.
Therefore, 75% of the Grade-10 De
Leon students got a mass of less than or equal
to 49.6 kg.

■ This answer confirms the correct answer on

the 3rd question of “ Bet on your classmate “
activity.

2. Fixing Skill
▪ Now it’s your turn to answer.
▪ Using the same table, I want you to find P85. Solution:

Step 1: Find the position of P85.

Step 2: Provide the needed information.

LB = 48.5
N = 36
cfb  = 25
=9
i = 5

Step 3: Substitute the information to the

formula of percentile and simplify.

Step 4: Interpretation.
Therefore, 85% of the Grade-10 De
Leon students got a mass of less than or
equal to 51.6 kg.

3. Generalization
▪ Do you have any questions class? ▪ None so far ma’am.
▪ Did you learn something today? ▪ Yes ma’am.
▪ What have you learned today? ▪ We have learned about the measure of
position of percentile for grouped data
ma’am.
▪ Very good.
▪ Now, what is the formula for the percentile
of grouped data?

▪ Excellent!
▪ Very good class, it seems like you really
understand our lesson for today.

4. Application
✓ With the same group that you have, you will
now complete a task that will assign to you. HEIGHT
✓ You will only have 10 minutes to complete Class Frequency Lower <cf

✓ After 10 minutes, you will post your work on 140-144 3 139.5 3

✓ The other group will be assigned to rate your 160-164 11 159.5 28
group using the rubric that I will provided 165-169 8 164.5 36
(the rubric is at the last page labeled as
RUBRIC) Solution:
Step 1: Find the position of P50.
(an envelope with the materials, rubric and the
guide for the activity will be provided per group
for the students)

Task: Step 2: Provide the needed information.

Given the assigned data for your group, LB = 159.5
make an FDT. N = 36
● Groups 1, 2 and 3 find P50. cfb  = 17
● Groups 4, 5 and 6 find P90.

work)
Step 3: Substitute the information to the
formula of percentile and simplify.

Step 4: Interpretation.
Therefore, 50% of the Grade-10De Leon
students got a height of less than or equal to
159.5 cm.
