16 HOMEWORK #2

1. Determine the final temperature when 10.0 g of aluminum at 130.0 °C is placed in
200.0 g of water at 25.0 °C.

Cwater = 4.184 J/g°C Caluminum = 0.901 J/g°C

2. A 50.6 g sample of iron is heated and put into 104.0 g of water at 19.7 °C. If the
final temperature is 24.3 °C, what was the temperature of the iron when it was
placed in the water?

Cwater = 4.184 J/g°C Ciron = 0.450 J/g°C

3. Calculate ΔH for the reaction 4NH3(g) + 5O2(g) → 4NO(g) + 6H2O(g) given the
following data:

N2(g) + O2(g) → 2NO(g) ΔH = -180.5 kj
N2(g) + 3H2(g) → 2NH3(g) ΔH = -91.8 kj
2H2(g) + O2(g) → 2H2O(g) ΔH = -483.6 kj

4. Given the following thermochemical equations,

C2H2(g) + 5/2 O2(g) → 2CO2(g) + H2O(l) ΔH = -1299.5 kj
C(s) + O2(g) → CO2(g) ΔH = -393.5kj
H2(g) + ½ O2(g) → H2O(l) ΔH = -285.8 kj

Calculate ΔH for the decomposition of one mole of acetylene, C2H2(g), into its
elements in their stable state.
