Traditional Chinese Music

Traditional Chinese music can be traced back 7,000-8,000 years and Chinese
culture was dominated by the teachings of the philosopher Confucius. He
conceived music in the highest sense as a means of calming the passion and of
dispelling unrest and lust rather than as a form of amusement.

What is it
“Painting in East Asia”

East Asian painting refers to Chinese painting,

Japanese painting and Korean painting. Painting
is one of the oldest such as paper or canvas. The
pigment may be in a wet form, such as paint, or a
dry form, such as pastels.
Painting started from pre-historic man. He used
red ochre and black pigment. Early paintings
often showed hunting scenes of man chasing https://images.app.goo.gl/jKg1gAWnk
various animals, such as: horses, rhinoceros, 2ikRbkh8

lions, buffaloes, mammoths. These prehistoric

paintings were drawn on the walls of caves,
blocks of stone, etc., and found all over the world,
including China.

Chinese Painting
The history of Eastern painting is as old as the
civilization of China. It is historically comparable
to Western painting. Eastern countries continued https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1a/Spring_Outing_of_the_T

the centuries.
Chinese painting is one of the oldest continuous
artistic traditions in the world. Painting in the
traditional style is known today in Chinese as
guóhuà meaning "national" or "native painting",
as opposed to Western styles of art which became
popular in China in the 20th century. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_China#/media/

Painting Subjects or Themes in China

1. Flowers and birds

2. Landscapes
3. Palace and temples
4. Human figures
5. Animals
6. Bamboos and stones

Important aspects in East Asian Painting:

● Landscape painting was regarded as the highest
form of Chinese painting. They also consider the
three concepts of their arts: Nature, Heaven and
Humankind (Yin-Yang). Chinese society, basically
agricultural, has always laid great stress on
understanding the pattern of nature and living in
accordance with it. Oriental artists often created
landscapes rather than paintings with the human
figure as subjects. https://images.app.goo.gl/V8gKaeEWVh3ZjY6C6

● Silk was often used as the medium to paint upon, but it was quite expensive. When
the Han court eunuch, Cai Lun, invented the paper in the 1st Century AD it provided
not only a cheap and widespread medium for writing, but painting became more
economical.

● The ideologies of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism played important roles in

East Asian art.
● Chinese art expresses the human understanding of the relationship between nature
and human. This is evident in the form of painting of landscapes, bamboo, birds,
and flowers, etc. This might be called the metaphysical, Daoist aspect of Chinese
painting.
Six Principles of Chinese Painting established by Xie He, a writer, art historian and
critic in 5th century China.
1. Observe rhythm and movements.
2. Leave spaces for the eyes to rest

What is it

Nature of the Game

Basketball is a team sport, wherein the objective is to shoot a ball through a basket
horizontally positioned to score points while following a set of rules. Usually, two
teams of five players play on a marked rectangular court with a basket at each width
end. Basketball is one of the world's most popular and widely viewed sports. A
regulation basketball hoop consists of a rim 18 inches in diameter and 10 feet high
mounted to a backboard.

A team can score a field goal by shooting the ball through the basket during regular
play. A field goal scores two points for the shooting team if a player is touching or
closer to the basket than the three-point line, and three points (known commonly as a
3-pointer or three) if the player is behind the three-point line. The team with the most
points at the end of the game wins, but additional time (overtime) may be issued when
the game ends with a draw. The ball can be advanced on the court by bouncing it
while walking or running (dribbling) or throwing (passing) it to a teammate. It is a
violation to move without dribbling the ball (travelling), to carry it, or to hold the ball
with both hands then resume dribbling (double dribble).

History
Basketball was invented in December 1891 by the Canadian clergyman, educator, and
physician James Naismith. At the request of his superior, Dr. Luther H. Gulick, he
organized a vigorous recreation suitable for indoor winter play. The game 64 involved
elements of American football, soccer, and hockey, and the first ball used was a soccer
ball. Teams had nine players, and the goals were wooden peach baskets affixed to the
walls. By 1897-1898, teams of five became standard.

10
The game rapidly spread nationwide and to Canada and other parts of the world,
played by both women and men; it also became a popular informal outdoor game. U.S.
servicemen in World War II (1939-1945) popularized the sport in many other
countries.

Basic Terminologies in Basketball

▪ Assist -a pass that subsequently results in a goal being scored
▪ Defensive Play -a type of play in team sports particularly in basketball wherein
the team aims at preventing the opponents from shooting the ball or gaining
possession of the ball.
▪ Defensive rebound -a rebound caught by defenders.
▪ Dribbling -a Basketball basic skill that allows you to move around the court
while you’re in possession of the ball. It is a legal method that allows you to
advance with the ball and make a score as opposed to that of passing it to a
teammate to shoot it for the basket. This move involves bouncing the ball off the
floor with your hands as you cover the floor.
▪ Drive -an attacking move at full speed. Dunk Shot-a spectacular scoring
maneuver when a player jumps high, reaches above the ring, and stuffs the ball
down through the hoop.
▪ Foul -an infraction or violation of the rules of a game.
▪ Passing -Basketball is a team game. By definition, that means all players are
involved with the process of playing the game and should function as one. One
of the primary skills created to accomplish this, is passing. It is a skill that
maximizes the involvement of all player in setting up a play to earn successful
shots and earn points for the whole team.
▪ Rebounding -one of the major aspects of the game. It is your ability to jump
with power to gain possession of the ball as it bounces to the rim after a failed
shot before it touches the floor. Just how important is rebounding? Whenever
you grab a rebound, your team gains a chance to shoot again while the other
team actually loses it
▪ Referee -the term used to refer to the officiating official in Basketball.

11
▪ Running -one of the most basic skills that a basketball player should possess.
Because in this sport, speed defines the best. Whether you’re on the offensive or
defensive side of the game, you always have to run in any way possible.
▪ Shooting -this is the act of throwing the ball with an intention of getting into
the ring or basket to earn points. An offensive skill that every basketball player
should master to win a game Though it is the most practiced skill in the game,
players should spend a good deal of their practice time on shooting drills to
improve their skill level.

What’s New

Directions: After finding the words,

answer the following guide questions.
1. What could be the connection
between the words you found?
2. Can you arrange these words
on how it should be sequenced?

What is it

We are feeling a lot of emotions as we grow up, and some of those emotions can be
more intense than others. These emotions are often felt when we are falling in love.
These emotions or feelings are infatuation, attraction and love. Let us see what the
differences of these three are.

A. Infatuation:
➢ Is a state of getting completely carried away by unreasoning passion or love.
➢ An addictive kind of feeling.
B. Attraction:
➢ Is the admiration for someone that may include the desire to get to know the
person better.
➢ The type of feeling where we recognize that the other person is flawed and we
are willing to know them better.
C. Love
➢ Is deep affection for someone and is based on a true desire for the other
person’s best interest.
➢ The healthiest type of relationship in which both people are committed to make
the best out of each other and are willing to compromise to make the
relationship work.

Now that we’ve already discussed the feeling involved in a relationship, let us now
move on to the phases we go through before marriage. These are namely courtship,
dating, engagement and marriage.

I. Courtship
➢ The period in a couple’s life which precedes the engagement and marriage.
➢ The period where the couple is getting to know each other.
➢ It is also an opportunity to know the background of each other.
➢ Here are some practices in courtship in the Philippines:
o ILOCOS and TAGALOG Regions – “Tapat” or “Harana” or serenading the
woman.
o BATANGAS – Men serves the family of the women by doing the household
chores. They are also obliged to pay respect to the women’s parents by
saying “Mano po”.
o PANGASINAN – they make use of “Taga-Amo” a form of love potion or charm
that can be rubbed on the skin of the admired.
o PALAWAN – “Pasaguli” or love riddles. This is to assess the sentiments of
their parents. After pasaguli, they will perform “PABALIC” where they settle
the price that the woman’s family would get from the suitor.

14
o MINDANAO – “Palabas, sarakahan, tupul, magpasumbahi” the suitor would
threaten to stab his heart in front of the woman’s father and if the father
refuses to give her daughter’s hand, the suitor is smitten by a knife.

➢ Here are some reasons why it is important for a couple to undergo courtship:
o It gives the couple time to get to know the person better.
o It gives the couple time to understand each other and determine if you can
get along with minimal conflicts.
o It reveals the interests, likes, dislikes, limitations and aspirations.
o It develops security and establishes respect.
o It develops acceptance and understanding.

II. Dating
➢ A social activity which involves two or more people generally assessing each
other’s suitability for a potential relationship.
➢ It can also be enjoyed while you are already in a relationship.
➢ There are different types of dating namely;
o Standard Date – involves two people.
o Double Date – two couples go on a date at the same time and place.
o Group Date – where any number of couples can enjoy the date.
➢ Importance of Dating:
o It strengthens relationship, provides partners to spend quality time
together, observe one another’s character, know each other better, know
each other’s strengths and weaknesses, reveal potential problems that may
arise, develop affection and respect for each other.
III. Engagement

➢ A period of agreement entered between two people in love for them to be able to
know each other and their families well enough to be sure that they are ready
for a life-long companionship. This is the period between dating and marriage,
where the couple begin to prepare for their wedding and future with each
other.
