Problem Set 3

Again, try to do this without looking at your notes or using a computer.

You can download spiral graphs here, just change the numbers as desired.
http://www.madmusicalscience.com/graphs/3in5.pdf

1. Choose some three-note chord and some eight-note scale; label the chords on the spiral
diagram, label the shortest path on the figure (Txty) and write an instance of that voice
leading in musical notation.

2. Do the same thing for a three-note chord in a six-note scale. It might be fun if your
three note chord was identical to your chord in problem 1, the same pitches in a different
scalar context, but this is not required.

3. On the attached Mobius strip draw and label paths corresponding to these voice
leadings:

1. (C4, E4)®(E4, C5)

2. (C4, E4)®(E3, C5)
3. (C4, E4)®(A3, F4)

4. On the attached cross-section of trichord space, draw and label paths corresponding to
these voice leadings:

1. (C4, E4, G4)®(C4, F4, A4)

2. (C4, F4, A4)®(B3, F4, G4)
3. (B3, F4, G4)®(As3, Fs4, Fs4)

Imagine this as a continuous progression.

5. Write the interscalar interval matrix for the diminished triad and major triad in
chromatic space (Appendix D of AGOM).
