2)AREAS OF WRITING

PROFESSOR: MS. LEAGIEREN KATES E. AQUINO

INTRODUCTION:

Why write?
The Pen is mightier than the sword.
Words are effective tools of communication, but people often forget
that words when written are even more powerful than those spoken.
“Write what you know”. This is certainly the basic rule in writing to
arrive at a desirable result in effective communication. But it is much
more than just an orthographic representation of speech. Learning to
write does not just require mastery of written symbols but how to
select and organize experiences according to a purpose.
Writing is naturally a physical activity which is as productive as
speaking. Just like any other components of communication through
language, writing is acquired procedurally where some mastery at one
level is essential for the writer.
As a language skill that clearly illustrates the use of cognitive process,
writing requires deep awareness of the facts, reasons, and ideas you
need every time you get into organizing them in a coherent and logical
structure. The process of writing is largely a process of thinking.
Ironically, however, this is one skill that has figured last in the list of
priorities of many language trainings courses. The traditional long-
standing emphasis on product over process in writing has resulted to
some misconceptions about how writing is produced. Yet, to any
writer, a piece of writing can never be produced if all the items shown
in the illustration that follows are not complied with appropriately.

ELEMENTS OF EFFECTIVE WRITING

1.Grammar
2.Syntax
3.Content
4.Mechanics
5.Organization
6.Voice choice
7.Audience
8.The writer’s process

Each item is geared towards a clear, fluent communication of ideas,

indeed, the prime of effective writing for whatever purposes across
disciplines.
Indeed, the aim of writing is to help you in using the language more
effectively for your own purpose. Being a good writer is partly a matter
of developing your right habits and attitudes. As a writer, you should
possess linguistic and extra linguistic knowledge to be able to write
effectively.
Linguistic knowledge includes the ability to use cohesive devices and
the knowledge of semantic relations, punctuations, and capitalizations.
Extralinguistic knowledge requires your knowledge of socio-cultural
rules to put your writings in context. Your composition should then
follow certain set of rhetorical, linguistic, and mechanical criteria such
as grammar rule, conventions and guidelines in writing as presented in
the illustrations.
Effective writing should consider purpose and audience. Purpose is the
aim of discourse, the context of, and reason for writing. It guides you
as the writer on what to do during all stages of the writing process.
For example purpose depicts what kind of prewriting is necessary. In
writing a paragraph of description, clustering might be helpful instead
of an outline.
Reasons for writing are varied. It may be personal that is, to satisfy
yourself or to share an experience, inform or demonstrate knowledge,
to persuade or to entertain. Whatever your intention is in writing, the
best way to establish purpose is to ask yourself, “Why do I write?”

AREAS OF WRITING
Any written communication is generally classified as academic,
journalistic, literary (creative) and technical. Glacing on a piece of
written work, you can readily identify its genre because of the text
types used, purpose, audience, and the format.
As to business and specific writing, these types may also fall under the
same category as technical due to their specialized areas of discipline.
Although at times, they are treated independently from technical
writing. Other books categorized all these text types (including
technical) under academic writing once the training takes place in the
school for academic purposes.
The moment writing is required in the workplace outside formal
training in school, the purpose shifts to occupational with specific
target readers.
