WRITTEN BY EDDIE HARRIS EDDIESMS To purchase this book is one thing To just read it is another When you read it, retain the contents and use it co your advantage and that's when you start to go furthers Man often wants to be Like others, without first searching within himself vo find uhether his aptitudes sometimes are far greater than those of any of his counterparts: To be a geod musician all you have to do ie practice. To be an exceptional musician you have to practice conscientiously and longer; To be a cuccessful musician, first become « successful hunen beings Every young man has a future, so keep in mind that potential and drive are shared by one uho is already avare and ambitious; Every old man is not over the hill until he stops growing within his mind; Stars are born, but popular stars are made, Therefore worldwide recognition could just mean one has a good publicity agent; Most young musicians are in such a hurry to make it to the top tomorrow, they could npt find the time to practice yesterday, Therefore they end up in complete stage of confusion today; Patience ic a virtue treasured by a select few but recognized by many; If you do not think this book or any book for that macter, will help you, please keep in mind that complacency is the enemy of progress; ‘A young mind could have elderly fingers or: rapid fingering can be retarded by an elderly mind. In order to infuse the fingers and mind successfully one should practices ‘The only instance in which "Time" works against you, the musician is vhen you neglect to use it to practice; Every musician chould have a positive attitude about hie style of playing, but when this attitude becomes critical and disrespectful tovard his fellow nusicians, others begin to wonder what you are about; Speech is a means of communication, not a puzzle, therefore, improvisation is a musical lecture played in context to be defined by the listener; . Music to the performer is personal and his endeavors are often misinterpreted by others; Reimbursement may be sonetimes small, but then great ability can never be measured by the tickets at the gate; There are no wrong intervels if played in succession; There are no wrong chords, only wrong progressions; There are no wrong notes, only wrong connections; There are no wrong tones, only wrong inflections. STANDING — spreadlegs so you will be ableto distribute your weight while blowing. Adjust neck strap so that when blowing youare ableto swallow normally. Make certaln that the mouthpiece Is in the center of your mouth. Tho hom should come down and angle to your right, whereas your right wrist Is even with tha blowing the Saxophone, you should look like youare looking'at a person that is an inch taller than you are. When sitting and reading keep the same posture as standing, but lean forward until you are able to read the music off the music stand plus anyone standing seven or nine feet in front of you When you're not playing, you should balance your horn with your right hand by continuously holding onto your instrument, while hooked to your neckstrap. Always hook the neckstrap to your horn from the right side (Open part of the hook facing left). Therefore, when holding the Saxophone when not playing, the neckstrap will not become disattached. Try not to move your body while blowing center of the right side of your body. because this will cause you to waste energy, let's say people have been known to pat their. foot. Pano Players sit directly behind middle C on the piano. Keep fingers curled for rapid execution. In order to play intervals nore affluenty use the thé fore finger (the finger next to the little finger) on both hands more than normal, : Trumpet Players do not lift your fingers from the valves while playing. Hold your head up and look etraight ahead. Less top lip for higher notes and curl: the tongue back under the lower front teeth for precise note production. Troubone Players hold your head up while playing. The lass top lip the higher you will be able to play. You should be able to play eight percent of your rapid execution within the first four positions. Guitar Players hold the guitar up high enough where ‘ae you are able to play ‘skips comfortably with up and down strokes (with the pick hend), Intervals are played faster actoss the Guitar. Bass Players who desire to play the bass with the index finger on the G string, the middle finger on the D string and the fore finger on the A string are able'to play intervals faster. With your position hand you should nov be able to play intervals across the Bass. SEVENTH HOUSE LIMITED PUB. P.O. BOX 45614 LOS ANGELES CA, 90045 U.S.A. DEFINITION OF AN INTERVAL »:. An interval Is a pitch difference between two tones of sufficient size or distance to produce the ‘sound of two different tones. An interval consists ‘of two dofinite pitch points. it has been found ex- perimentally that two intervals must differ from each other in riot less than 60 cents in order to be uniformly recognized es being different in quality. A cent isa unit of measurement adopted as a convenience to designate 1/1200 of an oc- lave or 1/100 of a semi-tone, Sth, 700 cents, minor 6th, 800 cents; diminished 5th, 600 cents; 4th, 500 cents; 3rd, 400 cents; minor 2nds, 100 cents, 60 cents is %4 of a tone, The quarter tone is thon the smallest pitch difference between two tones that can be perceived regularly as an in- terval and not a mere change in the same tone. The diatonic scale of 12 half steps is the normal culmination of @ patural musical evolution. Tharefore, it seems to me that the ¥e step is tha smallest safety margin for musical purposes. It takes a longer time to recognize a descending interval than one that ascends. This is because wo involuntarily begin a scale from below. When ‘a major chord is given we take the lowest note as tonic, the highost as the extended number of degrees from bottom upwards, Major 2nd strong- rasolves to tonic or Octave. Major 3rd strong- resdlves to tonic or fourth. 4th-stable-stays on the fourth carries equal relation to tonic (unresolved interval) 5th strong-returns to tonic or mejor 2nd, Major 6th supporter the pivot point, the weakest Point resolves to th mejor 2nd, never to 4th and tonic. Major 7th strong-retumn to tonic or ectave. Octave 8th, stable, returns to tonic or stays the same. Sometimes to 5th or 2nd before going back to tonic. ‘The most familiar interval is the Octave. If not, then I recommend you see a doctor or have your hearing checked. In order to recognize intorvals I suggest you observe more closely the pick-up to a tune you already know. By having the tune. in your mind you can look and see what combina- tion of intervals it took to produce that particular sound. When a person hears lower he has a tendency to play flat when playing high with plano, vibes, organ, or in a section. So when tun- ing up with another musician play high and low. notes with much force to find where your hear- ing is for that particular time. Cold weather ‘causes you to hoar higher, hot weather to hear lower. During the Spring and Fall and between the hours of 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. when the temperatures change directly after Sundown, your hearing of Intervals will give you the most problems. Minor 2nd supporter to the tonic, ma- Jor 2nd 7 Sth, Minor 3rd stronger pivot point resolves to major 3rd, major 2nd, Sth major 7th and 4th Diminished Sth Dissonance. It establishes a new tonic, Minor 6th pivot point resolves to the Eth, the tonic, the 4th, sometimes: bebe bpp hg re pn be, 4 4 ———— =< — f aa =. == =a me E = a4 EVE ree Fe Chromatic scale b 3 Fas —te +t + aa HTS ttt a fp aap Minor tad with a fein YE tnene tepee be F —— Sd = SEVENTH HOUSE LIMITED et ¢ ils KK Ips P.0. sox uses 10s anceres 1 CA, 9004S U.S.A.
