available for its meaning.
1. Context clues
Context clues are hints that an author gives to help define a difficult or unusual
word within a book. https://www.dictionary.com/e/context-clues/
There are at least four kinds of context clues that are quite common.
2
a. Synonym
Synonyms are words that have similar, or have a related meaning, to another
word. https://examples.yourdictionary.com/examples-of-synonyms.html
Example:
Rodrigo Roa Duterte, our President is highly intelligent, he strategized
solutions to fight Covid 19 pandemic. He is actually very savvy and smart.
b. Antonym
Antonyms are that have contrasting, or opposite , meanings.
https://examples.yourdictionary.com/examples-of-antonyms.html
Sometimes a word or phrase is clarified by the presentation of the opposite
meaning somewhere close to its use. Look for signal words when applying context
clues.
Example:
My cook is a bird drain, she prepares simple menu unlike the chefs of famous
hotels who can make their own sumptuous and nutritious recipe. They are very
savvy.
c. Definition/Explanation
A statement made to clarify something and make it understandable.
https://www.dictionary.com/browse/explanation
Example:
d. Example
Specific examples are used to define the term.
Example:
Pastry like doughnuts, muffins, pie and maple are best for dessert.
2. Structural analysis
Structural analysis is the process of breaking words down into their basic
parts to determine word meaning.
When readers break difficult words into familiar prefixes, suffixes, and root
words, it can improve fluency and comprehension.
Affix- is a set of letters added to the beginning or end of a root to modify meaning.
Prefix- word parts located at the beginning of a word to change meaning
Suffix- word parts attached to the end of the word. Suffixes often alter the part of
