21 In building houses and other structures, we often see workers used
22 framed wire screen to separate stones from the sand before it is mixed
23 with cement. They want the sand to be as fine as possible before they
24 mix it with the cement. This will result to a better cement mixture resulting
25 to stronger walls, flooring, and foundation of any building.
26 On the other hand, carpenters love to sip coffee early in the morning
27 before starting to work. They usually brew coffee and use a cloth to
28 filter the insoluble ground coffee from the liquid. These two processes of
29 separating mixtures involve filtering and sieving.

3 Solid and liquid components can be separated with the use of
4 filter paper or filter cloth as a medium in which liquid passes through a
5 filter paper leaving insoluble solid material in the medium.

7 I would like to give you additional information about filtering
8 that is not found in your module.
9 Filtration is said to be a method for separating an insoluble solid from a
10 liquid. You need to learn the following terms that are involved in the
11 process of filtration. We have Filter Medium, Residue, and a Filtrate.
12 For example, in a mixture of sand and water, for us to separate this
13 mixture we need to have a filter medium that will filter the mixture and
14 will separate the sand from the water. An example of this is a filter
15 paper or a piece of cloth. When we pour the sand and water mixture to
16 a different container and use a clothe as the filter medium, the sand
17 that stays behind in the filter medium becomes the residue and the
18 water that passes through the filter medium becomes the filtrate.

23 Sieving is a method in which two or more components of different
24 sizes are separated from a mixture based on the difference in their
25 sizes that uses a sieve.

27 To give you a clearer picture of what sieving is all about, let me give you
28 this information that you cannot find in your modules.
29 Sieving is a process where mixtures pass through a sorting device like a
30 screen to sort or separate the coarse from the fine particle, or to break
31 up lumps, like in flour, it can also separate bigger dry mixtures such as
32 gravel and sand.
