Prelim Exam

Instructions: Read through the case provided below and answer the following questions.

Prelim Case 2:

Shelly is a 21-year-old male who was accompanied by his mother. His mother talked to you and
expressed her concern regarding his son. “I forced him to come with me today to your office. He
obviously needs help but is too stubborn to admit and accept it.” She then proceeds in saying that his
son has not left his room for days unless it is to get food occasionally or to go to the toilet. He does not
eat regular meals and would rather eat junk food and drink 3 cups of coffee per day. His mother
continues to report that Shelly has stopped attending his classes because of his experiences of bullying
and that always led him to be insecure about his body. His mother discovered that Shelly cut his wrists
and had thoughts of dying written on his notebook. This raised her concern and forced him to get help
but he refuses it and says he’s not sick and he does not need to see any shrink. As you observe Shelly, he
seems upset and angry for being dragged to your office. He tells you “I don’t have a problem. I just don’t
want to go to school and I want to spend my time alone in my room. I’m not crazy. I just prefer my own
company. I’m a man and I don’t need to talk about my feelings to you or anyone!”.

Questions:

1. In what stage of the stages of change does Shelly belong? Justify your answer.
2. How would you respond to what Shelly shared to you? What specific counseling skills would you
implement and why? Specify at least 2 counseling skills.
3. Give two examples of statements per counseling skill that you’ve mentioned above.
