MODAL VERBS OF OBLIGATION
The modal verbs MUST – HAVE TO express obligation, prohibition or necessity, into Spanish it means DEBER –
TENER QUE

It is important to remember that the modal verb MUST only has present tense

Must is used to express that something is essential or an obligation, it is an internal and subjective

Must expresses a strong obligation which comes from laws or rules which are not respected may imply a punishment or
penalty

In negative form, MUSTN’T / MUST NOT is used to express prohibition

USE OF HAVE TO
Have to may be used in different tenses:

“HAVE TO” is used to express obligation in affirmative sentences. In negative sentences it expresses lack of obligation

Difference between HAVE TO – MUST


In affirmative sentences is possible to use MUST – HAVE TO but it is better to use HAVE TO when the obligation or
order comes from an EXTERNAL person, meanwhile MUST is used when the order or obligation comes from the
speaker (INTERNAL DECISION)

IN NEGATIVE SENTENCES, MUSTN’T expresses PROHIBITION, have to is used to express lack of obligation or
express that it is no necessary to do it. The translation into Spanish s NO HACE FALTA – NO TIENES QUE …
