A REPORT ABOUT

“Compressive Strength of Hydraulic Cement Mortars''

Student Name: Esmat Othman ali

No. of Test: “5 “

Date: 21-10-2017 Group: B

Code Name:

1
Scope
This test method covers determination of the compressive strength of
cement mortars, using 2 in ( 50 mm ) cube specimens.

2
Principle Apparatus:-
1-Weights and weighting device.

2-Glass Graduate.

3-Specimens molds.

5-Testing machine.

3
6-Tamper.

7-Trawel.

Specification:-
The specifications according the (ASTM) are:-
σC ≥ 19.3 Mpa [for type I cement] age 7 days
σC ≥ 12 Mpa [for type I cement] age 3 days

4
Procedure:-
1-Weigh (300) gm of cement and prepare the corresponding
weights of standard sand and water.
2-Place the dry paddle and the dry bowl in the mixing position
in the mixer , then introduce the materials for a batch into the
bowl and mix in the following manner.
3-Place all the mixing water in the bowl.
4-Add the cement to the water , then start the mixer and mix
at the low speed (140 ± 5 r/min ) for (30)s.
5-Add the entire quantity of sand slowly over a (30 )s period ,
while mixing at slow speed.
6-Stop the mixer , change to medium speed (285 ± 10 r/min) and
mix for 30s.
7-Stop the mixer and let the mortar stand for 1.5 min, during
the first (15s) of this interval, quickly scrape down into the batch
any mortar that may have collected on the side of the bowl.
8-Finish by mixing for (1min ) at medium speed.
9-Thinly cover the interior faces of the specimen molds with
oil.
10-Start molding the specimens within a total time of not more
than 2.5 min after comleting of mixing.
11-Place a layer of mortar about 25mm (half the depth of the
mold ) in all the cube specimens.

5
12-Temp the mortar in each cube 32 times (4x8) , about 4 rounds
to be at right angles to the other . the temping pressure shall
be just sufficient to insure uniform filling of the molds.
13-The 4 rounds of taming shall be completed in one cube
before going to the next.
14-When the tamping of the first layer in all cubes is completed
, fill the molds with the remaining mortar and tamp as specified
for the first layer.
15-Cut off the mortar to a plane surface with a straight edge.
16-Keep the molds in a moist room for 20-24 hours then open
them and keep the specimens in a water basin for a week.
17-After 7 days (±𝟑 hours ) , take the specimens out of the basin
, dry them with a clean cloth , put them one after the other in
the testing machine.
18-The cubes must be put on one side , using extra steel plates
up and down the specimen.
19-Start loading in a speed of 1.4 KN/sec or (350 kg/cm2).
20-When failure , record load and compressive strength.

The average of compressive strength (Mpa) is 12.355 Mpa and it is

not with the specifications.

Discussion:-
Compressive strength test not made on neat cement paste
because of difficulties in obtaining good specimens and in testing
with a consequent large variability of test result. Our sources for a
compressive strength are from the (ASTM) specification and (B.S)
specification. The (B.S) specification for cement are (70×70×70)mm
cubes, 1:3 of mix, we will choose the 10% of water for 1:3 of mix,
σC ≥ 16 MPa for 3 days and σC ≥ 23 MPa for 7 days. The (ASTM)
specification for cement are (50×50×50)mm cubes, 1:2.75 of mix,
we will divided the water above the cement and equal to us 0.485,
σC ≥ 12 MPa for 3 days and σC ≥ 19.3 MPa for 7 days. The standard
sand for (ASTM) specification is (1:2.75) and the standard sand for
(B.S) specification is (1:3).
