SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS:

1.How resources are classified on the basis of Exhaustibility? Mention their features.

a. Renewable Resources:
The resources which can be renewed or reproduced by physical, chemical or mechanical processes are known
as renewable (or) replenishable resources.
They include solar and wind energy, water, forests and wildlife.
They are further divided into continuous or flow resources.
i. Non- Renewable resources:
These resources take millions of years in their formation
They include minerals and fossil fuels.
2. How resources are classified on the basis of origin?
a. Biotic Resources:
These are obtained from biosphere and have life such as human beings, flora and fauna, fisheries and
livestock.
b. Abiotic Resources:
All these things which are composed of non-living things such as rocks and metals.

LONG ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS:

1. How are resources classified based on the status of development?

(a) Potential resources:
Resources which are found in a region, but have not been utilised. For example, the western parts of
India particularly Rajasthan and Gujarat have enormous potential for the development of wind and solar energy
but so far have not been developed fully.
Developed resources:
Resources which are surveyed and their quantity and quality have been determined for utilization.
Stock:
Materials in the environment which have the potential to satisfy human needs but human being do not
have suitable technology.

Reserves: are the subset of the stock which can be put into use with the hup of existing technical ‘know-how’
but their use has not been started.

2. What steps can be taken to control soil erosion in the hilly areas?
(i) Contour ploughing:
Ploughing along the contour lines can decelerate the flow of water down the slopes.
(ii) Terrace farming:
Terrace cultivation restricts erosion western and central Himalayas have well developed.
(iii) Strip cropping:
Large fields can be divided into strips; strips of grass are left to grow between the crops.
This breaks up the force of the wind.
(iv) Shelter belts:
Planting lines of trees to create shelter also works in a similar way, The Rows of trees are
called shelter belts.
