At the end of the course, students are able to:

1. Explain the basic concepts and principles of mechanics and thermodynamics (C2, PLO1)
2. Apply the concepts of mechanics and thermodynamics to solve numerical problems (C4, PLO1, PLO3,
CTPS1)

3. Analyse the concepts of mechanics and thermodynamics,scientific skills,scientific attitudes and moral
values in experiments (C4, A5, PLO1,PLO2, PLO3, CTPS2)

4. Discuss critically in the form of writings,the concepts of mechanics and thermodynamics in daily life using
various sources as references (C5,PLO1, PLO3, PLO6, CTPS3, LL1)

This course work evaluates 1st , 2nd, 3rd and 4th learning outcomes.

Course work Objectives:

Students can perform the following tasks:


1. Through quiz, students are able to;
i. Explain the basic concepts and principles of mechanics and thermodynamics.
ii. Apply the concept of mechanics and thermodynamics to solve numerical problems.
2. Through practical reports, students are able to;
i. Analyse the concepts of mechanics and thermodynamics, scientific skills, scientific
attitudes and moral values in experiments
3. Through essay writing, students are able to;
i. Discuss critically the concepts of thermodynamics in two appliances used in our daily
lives with references to various sources of information.

Mechanics focuses on the motion of particles or bodies under the action of forces, while thermodynamics,
deals with the concepts of heat and temperature and the inter-conversion of heat to other forms of
energy. It is very important for the students not just to have knowledge of the basic concepts and principles
of mechanics and thermodynamics but to understand the principles behind everyday devices. The
practicals allow the students to master the basic concepts.
It is hoped that by mastering the concepts, students are able to analyse and explain its applications in everyday
appliances.

This coursework has three tasks; a quiz on mechanics and thermodynamics, three practical reports on
mechanics and thermodynamics, and an essay on the application of the thermodynamics principles in
everyday appliances.

Task 1 (10%) :
Quiz covers topics of mechanics and thermodynamics consists of 20 objectives questions and 2 structured
questions. Answer all the questions.

Task 2 (30%) : Practical Reports (3 reports)


Planning and data collection in pairs,
Report individually

1. Plan and execute the three practicals.


i. Practical 1 Force and Motion

i. Practical 2 Momentum and Collision

ii. Practical 3 Bouyancy and Archimedes Principle

2. Write three complete practical reports.

Task 3: Essay (20%)


Individually

1. Choose two appliances that use princles of mechanics and thermodynamics in everyday life
2. Research and write an essay of about 1200 words on the working principles of the appliances.
3. Your writing should include the following:
Introduction
 Background of the appliances
Research Analysis
 Analysis of the principles applied in the appliances
 Explaination of the similarity and differences of the appliances
 Images, tables, charts
 Ideas for functional improvements for both appliances
Organisation
 Choice of resources and information
 Flow of paragraphs
Conclusion
4. List at least four different sources.

Task Implementation Instructions:

1. Essays and reports need to be typed using a computer.


2. Font type is Arial, size 11 and line spacing 1.5.
3. References to be stated in APA format.
4. The cover should include the following:
i. Student name
ii. Matric number
iii. IC number
iv. Group
v. Code and Course Name
vi. Lecturer name
vii. Submission date

5. Plagiarism is strictly prohibited. In case of plagiarism, the student will fail his/her coursework.
6. This coursework carries 100 marks with a weightage of 20%
7. Tasks will be corrected based on the assessment rubric.
