I. OBJECTIVIES

At the end of the experiment students must be able to:

Cognitive

a.) understand the Norman’s principle of everyday life.

.

Psychomotor:

a.) determine which things violates the Norman’s principle.

Affective

a.) appreciate the concept of Norman’s principle in the design of everyday things.

II. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

To accomplish this task, the student must have a clear understanding of the following topics:

● The concept of HCI

● HCI Design Rules
● Norman’s 7 Principle of Design

III. PROCEDURES

Take a picture of everyday things, must not be IT related and answer the following:

● Where did you get the picture?

● What Norman’s principle was violated in the picture you have taken?
● Explain how it violates the Norman’s principle.

Present the picture in the class and discuss your assignment.

IV. Assessment

Criteria Descriptions Points

Validity of the photo Photo must be taken by the student 25%

Norman’s principle used Correctness of the principle used for the 25%
photo

Explanation Clarity of the argument for the principle being 30%

violated in the photo

Presentation Delivery of the homework 20%

Total 100%

Note: The following rubrics/metrics will be used to grade students’ output in the lab 1.

Norman’s Principle

1. Principle 1

Example:

PROF. JAEVIER A. VILLANUEVA

• In this photo shows the prices of their products. I ordered and paid 650
pesos. I wondered why I need to pay for their Large Palabok itself. The
delivery man said that the delivery fee is 50 pesos and the Large Palabok
is 600 pesos. So, based in the Norman's Principle, this photo violated the
Concept of Consistency which has to cause the same reaction every time.
The Signage or Their ads failed in terms of product pricing and delivery
fee as it should be all consistent unless change their signage or ads to the
actual or real price to avoid confusion.

2. Principle 2

Example:

• In this photo shows the two pictures which are the ice cream tub and the
ice cream tub filled by fish. So, based in the Norman's Principle, this photo
violated the first principle which is Use both knowledge in world &
knowledge in the head. Generally speaking, as Filipinos like to reuse
some things, it is better to put a label to avoid any misconception or
misuse of things that may also cause possible accident. Not expecting too
much also helps.

PROF. JAEVIER A. VILLANUEVA

3. Principle 3

Example:

• This photo shows improper road sign and it creates confusion and worst
ended up in accident. This photo violated the concepts of Norman's
principle which are the Mapping and Consistency. The design should be
something that will closely resemble on what they effect but, on this photo
shows "Keep Right" but the "Arrow" is pointing to the left.
