Services available at Nephrology department, Serdang Hospital

Outpatient service
1. General nephrology clinic
 This clinic will prepare on the investigation, diagnosis, therapy, counselling and
follow-up treatment which is exclusively for patients undergoes nephrology
issues such as metabolic issues (gout, diabetes), genetic renal disease (for
instance autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, ADPKD), the
glomerulonephritides ( systemic lupus erythematosus, SLE nephritis *an autoimmune
disease
, nephrotic syndrome *is a collection of symptoms due to kidney damage ), nephropathies
( obstructive, reflux, proteinuria *presence of protein in a person’s urine, hematuria *presence of blood in a
person’s urine
, abnormal kidney functionality, abnormal anatomy, etc), stages of
kidney failures, infected urinary tract, etc.

2. Kidney transplant clinic


 Clinic for kidney donor and receiver after surgery for their follow-up treatments.
 The nurse who involved in kidney transplant surgery is required to be at the
clinic to help the doctors.
 Every Monday and Thursday in a week, where on Monday, is for those who
undergo kidney transplant within 3 months period meanwhile on Thursday, will
be for those who will be receiving kidney and kidney donor.

3. Chronic Ambulatory Perineal Dialysis (CAPD) clinic


 All patients undergoing CAPD or APD treatment will receive follow-up treatment
at this clinic. All patients will have regular check-ups including "exit-site" check-
ups at this clinic regularly. They are required to bring along their treatment
records for evaluation. Routine prescriptions for disposable materials (including
lines and fluids) and medications will be given at this clinic. CAPD nurses should
be present at this clinic to assist doctors.
4. Hemodialysis clinic
 All patients receiving chronic hemodialysis treatment at Serdang Hospital will be
given a clinical evaluation at this clinic. Regular prescriptions for their
medications will be provided at this clinic.

5. Hypertension and research clinic


 Special clinics to specific groups of patients can be established in the future and
when necessary. Examples include refractory hypertension, renovascular
hypertension, SLE nephritis clinic, in-trial medicine clinic, vascular access clinic
and so on.

6. Hemodialysis unit (outpatient)


 This unit will provide long-term dialysis treatment to patients with end-stage
renal failure including those scheduled for kidney transplants (living donors) and
kidney transplants (survivors or deceased donors) who fail.
 Training for hemodialysis at home or office will be provided in this unit. Short-
term hemodialysis not exceeding one month can be offered to patients with
ESRF from outside this unit (from Serdang Hospital or others) if and when
necessary.
 A decision to extend this period can be made if the patient continues to be an
inpatient at Serdang Hospital for certain reasons.
Operating hours : Monday till Saturday ( including public holidays, 7am-9pm), Sunday (closed
except for emergency purposes)

7. CAPD unit
 Train CAPD patients or their assistants how to carry out CAPD treatment
 Provide long-term treatment needs including the production of CAPD disposable
goods and "transfer sets"
 Provide facilities for outpatients or inpatients to carry out their regular CAPD
exchange when they need services at Serdang Hospital, for example, attending
follow-up treatment at an outpatient clinic or undergoing an investigation /
nephrological treatment or at other departments at Serdang Hospital.
 Provide clinical feedback on the current status of CAPD patients such as "exit-
site" status when patients attend CAPD clinics, patient motivation, admission of
patients to the ward for certain reasons and others.
 Obtain results/details and record CAPD-related matters and activities such as
culture and sensitivity results from "exit-site" and CAPD fluid, "peritoneal
equilibrium test" (PET) results, daily CAPD treatment records, complications
(peritonitis, infection " exit-site ”, poorly functioning catheter, catheter leakage
etc.) and records of treatment results associated with CAPD patients.
 Provide counselling and retraining services to prospective patients, new patients
and existing CAPD patients.
 Provide data related to CAPD activities to the "National Transplant and Dialysis
Registry".
 The responsibility of managing CAPD patients admitted to the ward at Serdang
Hospital will be shared by ward staff and CAPD unit staff. Preference will be
given to a CAPD patient who needs admission to the 7A Nephrology ward to
facilitate the exchange

Inpatient service
The following services will be provided in the nephrology ward including specialized rooms for
hemodialysis treatment and CAPD-related treatment.
1. General Nephrology
2. “Intermittent Peritoneal Dialysis” (automatic and manual)
3. CAPD (training & complication management)
4. Haemoperfusion and acute hemodialysis haemodiafiltration (including continuous
hemodialysis procedures, this can also be performed in intensive care or coronary care
units)
5. Plasmapheresis/plasma exchange.
6. Kidney transplantation
7. Kidney biopsy
8. Insertion of temporary hemodialysis vascular catheter.

Services available at Hemodialysis Unit, Kajang Hospital


Service scope

 Perform hemodialysis procedures regularly for end-stage fruit failure patients screened
by a Consultant Nephrologist.
 Perform hemodialysis procedures for acute and emergency cases from wards, ICUs and
Emergency Departments.
 Manage and manage appointments of chronic hemodialysis patients on the day of the
Nephrologist.
Operation hour: every Monday to Saturday ( including public holidays ) from 7 am-9 pm.
Nephrology clinic: every Thursday first week of each month (9 am-12 pm)

every Wednesday, 9am-12.30pm
