INVERSE FUNCTION
Let a function f be a one-to-one function.
Then, the inverse function f¯¹ is the set of
ordered pairs obtained from f by interchanging
the first and second elements of each ordered
pair.
Two functions f(x) and g(x) are inverse
functions if, and only if, --

1. For each x in the domain of g, g(x) is in

the domain of f and
(f o g)(x) = f(g(x)) = x
2. For each x in the domain of f, f(x) is in the
domain of g and
(g o f)(x) = g(f(x)) = x
1. Show that
f(x) = x/3 – 3 and
g(x) = 3x + 9 are
inverse functions.
1. Show that f(x) = x/3 – 3 and g(x) = 3x + 9 are
inverse functions.
Finding the inverse of a Function

To find the inverse of a one-to-one function,

follow these steps.

1. Write y = f(x)
2. Solve this equation for x in terms of y.
3. Interchange x and y. The resulting equation
is f¯¹(x).
1. Find the inverse
of f(x) = 4x -5.
1. Find the inverse of f(x) = 4x -5.
STEP 1. Write y = f(x)
f(x) = 4x – 5 y = 4x - 5
STEP 2. Solve the equation for x in terms of y.
f(x) = 4x – 5 y = 4x - 5
STEP 3. Interchange x and y. The resultin
equation is f¯¹ (x)
y = 4x – 5 x = 4y – 5
x + 5 = 4y
y = (x+5)/4
f¯¹ (x)= (x+5)/4
1. Find the inverse of
f(x) = (x⁵+4)/3.
