 External floating roof and internal floating roof are quite similar but main difference is that In
internal floating roof tanks there will be one more fixed cover (mostly cone shape) while in
external floating roof above roof there will not be any cover.
 Single deck means roof is sheet metal type (negligible thickness) while double deck means two
plates separated by a small distance. Double deck is very much useful when it’s necessary to
control heat transfer across roof because in double deck two plates separated by a small
distance contains air in the gap which works as an insulation and control the heat transfer.
 3 Fire protections:
(i) MVWS
(ii) Spray System
(iii) Rim Seal fire protection
 OISD 116 & API 650
 Pontoons in single deck
 All the tank farms and other areas of installation where hydrocarbons are handled shall be fully
covered by hydrant System.
 Requirement of Fixed Water Spray System:

Type of stored Product Floating Roof Fixed Roof

Class A Reqd. Reqd.
Class B Reqd. If D>30m Reqd. If D>20m
Class C Not necessary Not necessary

 Requirement of Semi Fixed Foam System:

Type of stored Product Floating Roof Fixed Roof

Class A Reqd. Reqd.
Class B Reqd. Reqd.
Class C Not necessary Reqd. If D>40m

 Requirement of Automatic Actuated Rim Seal Protection System:

Automatic actuated rim seal fire detection and extinguishing system shall be provided on all
existing as well as new External Floating Roof Tanks storing Class A petroleum.
This shall be in addition to the water spray and semi-fixed foam system on all the
floating roof tanks storing class- A products.
 Floating Roof tank:

The overall diameter of the roof is normally 400 mm smaller than the inside diameter of the tank,
which has about 200 mm gap on each side between the roof and the inside tank wall.

The storage tank capacity is sized in accordance with 85, 000 barrel tanker and 3 days of
unavailability of the off loading system at production rate 51 000 barrels per day.
