The GPS is a round-the-clock satellite navigation system that communicates with a BTS in
wireless mode. The GPS provides accurate three-dimensional location, velocity, and time for
worldwide users. The BTS GPS Synchronization feature enables a BTS clock to be synchronized
with the GPS clock source. After the BTS is synchronized with the GPS, the error of the frame
synchronization over the Um interface is smaller than one bit. Therefore, the frequency
utilization is increased and the interference is decreased in the wireless network.
3 Technical Description
To receive GPS clock signals, the DBS3900, BTS3900, and BTS3900A must be configured with
a Universal Satellite card and Clock Unit (USCU) to provide external time synchronization
source for the GTMU so as to implement clock synchronization over the entire network.
The GPS antenna receives the GPS satellite signals at a rate of 1575.42 MHz and then transmits
them to the GPS card. The GPS card processes the signals to obtain the GPS absolute time and
precise 1PPS pulse signals. The BTS clock circuit traces the 1PPS pulse signals to obtain the
reference clock and then obtains various clock signals based on the reference clock. The USCU
transmits the various clock signals to the GTMU. The GTMU then uses the clock signals to
implement clock synchronization of the BTS. Each BTS in the network adjusts the frame number
based on the absolute frame number calculated from the GPS absolute time that is received by
the BTS software.
To ensure network synchronization precision, training sequence numbers (TSCs) must be
properly planned to avoid that sites are on the same frequency. At sites where same frequencies
and same TSCs are planned, the speech quality may deteriorate. When this happens, adjust the
in frame bit offset at the sites to minimize speech quality deterioration. The in frame bit offset
can be changed only in TDM mode.
4 Engineering Guidelines
To ensure the normal operation of the USCU, the parameter CFGFLAG must be set to YES
(Yes) to enable the parameter configuration of the USCU. If the parameter
GPSORGLONASS is set to GPS(GPS), the BTS traces the GPS clock signals. The parameter
ANTENNAPOWERSWITCH specifies whether to turn on the power supply switch of the GPS
antenna. If the GPS antenna requires power supply, this parameter needs to be set to
SENDPOWER(Send Power). If the GPS antenna does not require power supply, this parameter
needs to be set to NOPOWER(No Power). Currently, the GPS antennas of all Huawei BTSs
do not support power supply. The parameter ANTENNALONG specifies the length of a GPS
feeder. The GPS card is connected to the antenna through the GPS feeder. The transmission
delay over the feeder can be evaluated on the basis of the length of the GPS feeder. This helps
to improve the time accuracy of the GPS card. After the parameters related to the USCU are set,
the clock trace mode of the BTS needs to be modified so that the USCU of the BTS can perform
GPS clock synchronization. If the parameter ClkType is set to TRCGPS_CLK(Trace GPS
Clock), the BTS extracts the clock signals from the GPS through the DGPS.
At the sites where same frequencies and same TSCs are planned, set FRAMEBITOFFSET to
0 or 80.
5 Parameters
transmission. If
this parameter is
set to
TRCGPS_CLK,
the BTS extracts
the
synchronization
clock from the
GPS using the
DGPS or USCU.
If this parameter
is set to
UM_CLK, the
BTS keeps pace
with the signals
broadcast on the
downlink main
BCCH of a
neighboring
BTS. If this
parameter is set
to PEER_CLK,
the multimode
BTS(GSM)
keeps pace with
the signals that
the other mode
offer. If this
parameter is set
to
SYNETH_CLK
, the multimode
BTS(GSM)
keeps pace with
the SynEth
Clock. If the
BTS does not
support the
clock source
type specified
by "ClkType",
the value of
"ClkType"
cannot take
effect on the
BTS. As a result,
the initialization
fails after the
BTS resets.
