Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Telling the Weather

Content Area/Grade Level(s): 4th grade / Science
Content Standard Addressed:
S4E4: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to predict weather events and infer weather
patterns by using charts/maps and collected weather data.

Technology Standard Addressed:

This lesson addresses ISTE1. Students are expected to demonstrate what they know after watching
educational videos about weather and climate.

Guiding Question(s):
What is weather vs climate?
How could you predict the weather?

Selected Technology Tool:

Padlet is the tool being used for this lesson. This tool is used to provide an environment where
students can share their answers with the class.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐

Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or
Choice” during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is
student-driven and student-led. Students should have “Voice and Choice” in the activities,
selecting the topic of study and determining the technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the
standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student
work and promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s
morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.
Your student’s projects must be shared locally or globally to meet this level.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This activity is chosen to give students engaging videos to teach them about telling weather and
climate. The song video gives students an easy way for students to remember the weather

instruments. By using a song, these things will be easier to remember. The other three videos are
interesting and engaging without being too lengthy. I added questions for the students to engage in
on the Padlet to show me that the videos provided were watched.

Lesson idea implementation:

This assignment/lesson would be perfect as an introduction to a larger project. The videos are short
and engaging. Student learning will be assessed by how they answer the questions on the Padlet.
This is a very informal assessment of the student’s work. This is designed to act as an introduction to
a project in class or reference of material for testing for online courses. Asking students to create
their own video about our weather unit like the ones they have viewed could extend this. I will
conclude the lesson with a class discussion about what the students watched, learned and if there
are any questions.

Reflective Practice:
I feel like the activities are enough to get what is expected by the standards accomplished. To extend
this, students could have a project supporting the information they have viewed through these
videos. The green screen would be a great add on for students to create their own weather channel
as a project following this introduction. Adding the green screen would finalize this lesson to ensure
all learning material is applied as well as just learned.
