A. RESEARCH INFORMATION

RESEARCH TITLE

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE RECORD (IPR) TOOL: A Grading

Transparency Tool Motivating Student Effort in Learning EngagemenT

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH

Individual Performance Record (IPR) is a tool developed by the
teacher/researcher in answer to her problem on negative behaviors of the
Senior High School students of Upper Maculan National High School towards
their past grading system. The tool consists of the requirements in
accordance to the K to 12 grading system, Written Tasks, Performance Tasks,
Periodical Examinations. Percentage is based on the criteria of the subject.
Most of them were reluctant enough thinking that even they do not attend
classes, do not engage in tasks given by their subject teacher, still they could
pass and even promoted. The IPR will then serve as their monitoring tool
whether they pass the subject or fail. Thus, opposite of what they thought.

ANNEX 2: Minimum Requirements of the Research Proposal

ACTION RESEARCH PROPOSAL

I. Context and Rationale
Several papers have proposed that the grading system
affects students’ incentives to exert effort. In particular, previous
literature has compared student effort under relative and
absolute grading systems, but the results are mixed and the
implications of the models have not been empirically tested.
(Paredes, 2017)
Many teachers spend hours arguing with students and

parents about final grades every term. Grading discrepancies

happen when a student, expecting a high score, gets

surprised by a sudden drop. With no more time to correct the

issue with extra credit or in-class assignments, they often

consider arguing to be their only path left. When students

can’t see their progress and performance throughout the year,

they may not realize how low their grade has fallen. Even

when students realize they are at-risk, they rarely share the

information with parents. If the grade drop happened after

mid-terms, parents might not find out about a failing grade

until the final report card hits the mail. However, one

straightforward and elegant solution to grade shock is

improved transparency. (senior systems, 2016)

.An American comedian, George Carlin said, “Honesty is

the best policy”. This motto is so simple that most of the time
truth of it is being disregarded. It is why this research proposal
is founded. When we build trust, values, good character follow.
Thus, soliciting students’ participation in a given task could be
easier.
I have been teaching in an Indigenous Peoples school at
Lake Sebu, South Cotabato for three years in the elementary
and another three for secondary specifically in the Senior High
School. In my observation, ever since I taught in these schools,
I found out that most of my students (not so observed in the
elementary) in the Senior High School are inactive, introvert,
reluctant and unmotivated. A senior high school student said,
“Pasado lang man mi gyapon mam biskan indi mi
magparticipate, para ano nga mag-effort pa kami?” (We still
pass and be promoted even we do not participate why should
we effort then?).
The teacher with the school head as the co-proponent
has developed a tool which believed to be significant to this
study, the Individual Performance Record (IPR) tool. The
students, specifically the Senior High School Students were
given this tool, a manual recording half lengthwise bond paper
where they personally record their scores every after a
performance task is done. Components of the said tool are the
Written Tasks, Performance Tasks and Periodical Examination
with corresponding percentage (differently in every subject)
based on the K to 12 grading system. After their recording, the
teacher gathers and countersigns the score to confirm that it is
recorded in the teacher’s e-class record. The tool serves also as
their monitoring form whether they would pass or fail the subject.
Remedial is also given to those unable to get the passing grade.
When the tool was initially used for the first quarter, students
were observed to have demonstrated different behaviors. Some
showed to be happy, contented and are excited in doing their
performance tasks. To some who got lower than the passing
grade, they showed to be more motivated and promising
themselves to make better performance.

II. ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1. What is Individual Performance Record (IPR) tool? What are
its contents and how is score/grade recorded?
2. How does it affect the academics performance/learning
engagement of the Senior High School students of Upper
Maculan National High School?
3. What are positive behaviors being observed as they
manually and personally record their scores in their IPR?
4. What are negative behaviors demonstrated by the students?
How will the subject teacher handle such behavior?
5. What are the participants’ different perceptions on using the
Individual Performance Record in monitoring their scores?
How does it affect their behavior in passing/failing grades?

III. PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION AND STRATEGY

As stated earlier, an Individual Performance Record
(IPR) tool was developed by the researchers to give solution to
the problem on the learning engagement of the Senior High
School students of Upper Maculan National High School. The
researcher believed that this could be a included as best
practice of honesty and trust among the teacher and the
students in order to achieved better learning and teaching
environment. Cases of drop outs and absenteeism (due to lack
of interest, inferiority, introvert behavior and reluctance) are one
of the targets to be diminished through using such tool.

IV. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS

After observing a positive impact, the researcher would
like to conduct this research with the following methods.
Participants will be the Grade 11 – HUMSS students of
Upper Maculan National High School where cases of
absenteeism and drop out were high on the first month of this
school year, 2019-2020. When these students were given their
Individual Performance Record, absenteeism was minimized
and no more drop outs as per recorded by their adviser in their
monthly attendance school form or SF2.
Participants will be asked to tell their own story about
their experiences on doing their own performance scores/grade.
They will also be asked to include in their story what are the
implications of having their own scores seen by their eyes,
transparent as it is, how their opinions and views about grading
system transformed and develop their learning engagement.
Subject teachers will also be asked on their observations and
how does the tool help them in accessing their students.
After gathering the data, a thematic analysis will be
applied. Data will then undergo a series of instigation through
coding.

VII. PLANS FOR DISSEMINATION AND UTILIZATION

Dissemination and utilization of this action research will be
implemented as soon as the approval from the division is
achieved. Utilization of the said tool will be recommended as
soon as possible and be monitored for its maximum use for the
benefit of the Grade 11 students and practice will also be
suggested to be used also by other grade level in the school of
Upper Maculan National High School.
