VEHICLE VOLTAGE REGULATION TEST PROCEDURE

1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Purpose
This document defines the test procedure for measuring the test vehicle’s voltage regulation in response
to the addition and removal of loads and varying engine rpm.

1.2 Coverage of this Standard

This standard covers all Chrysler vehicles for 2009MY and beyond.

2.0 SPECIAL TEST EQUIPMENT & MATERIALS

TABLE <n>: SPECIAL TEST EQUIPMENT

Name Of Item Description Make/Model (1)
Dewetron Analog voltage & CAN recorder Dewe 5000
Shunts 400A 50 mv (2) RAM Meter
With Vector CAN Card and CDA
Laptop Computer Dell
software.

(1) If Applicable

3.0 SUMMARY OF METHOD

Use Dewetron data recorder to measure system voltage reactions to application and removal of loads
and variation of engine rpm.

4.0 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

No loose clothing allowed while working under the hood with engine running. Protect electrically hot
connections from grounding.

The battery must be less than 12 months old with less than 12,000 miles on it. The battery must be fully
charged (minimum 80%). The battery and engine coolant temperature should preferably be at room
temperature at the beginning of this test.

6.0 SAMPLING

Set data acquisition rate to 1,000 samples/second with a 50kHz low pass filter for the current
measurement channels and a 20 kHz low pass filter for the voltage measurement channels.

7.0 PROCEDURE

A.) Test Setup

1.) Load Current Measurement

 Install 500A/100mv shunt in series with TIPM battery feed and connect Dewetron leads
to shunt
 Install 500A/100mv shunt in series with system current lead from TIPM and connect
Dewetron leads to shunt
 Set data acquisition rate to 1,000 samples per second
 Set low pass filter to 50kHz

2.) RPM Measurement

 Connect Dewetron to CAN B or CAN I bus and setup to record the engine rpm (message
id 002h for CAN B and message id 211h for CAN I)

3.) Battery Voltage Measurement

 Connect Dewetron leads across the vehicle battery terminals.
 Set data acquisition rate to 1,000 samples per second
 Set low pass filter to 20kHz

4.) TIPM Voltage Measurement (For vehicles with battery in rear)

 Connect Dewetron leads to the TIPM B+ jump terminal and ground
 Set data acquisition rate to 1,000 samples per second
 Set low pass filter to 20kHz

5.) Set Waveform colors

 Set battery voltage waveform color to orange
 Set RPM waveform color to light green
 Set battery current waveform color to green
 Set Load current waveform to red
 Set TIPM B+ voltage waveform color to blue

B.) RPM Response Test Procedure

1.) Turn off all controllable loads.

2.) Start engine and let engine idle for 2 minutes to stabilize engine rpm
3.) Start recording data with the Dewetron
4.) Quickly rev engine with the accelerator pedal to approximately 2,500 rpm and then remove
foot from accelerator pedal
5.) After engine rpm has returned to idle, repeat step 4 two more times

6.) Stop recording data with the Dewetron.
7.) Shut engine off
8.) Store data for analysis

C.) Load Response Test Procedure

1.) Turn off all controllable loads.

2.) Start engine and let engine idle for 2 minutes to stabilize engine rpm.
3.) Start recording data with the Dewetron.
4.) Turn the EBL on, wait for 10 seconds then turn EBL off
5.) Wait 5 seconds and then lower all power windows simultaneously and hold the switches in
the down position for a minimum for 5 seconds with window motors stalled or until circuit
protection activates.
6.) Using a laptop with CAN card connected to the diagnostic connect and running CDA tool, go
into the PCM/More Options/On Board Routines/Idle speed set-point screen and set engine
rpm to 1,500.
7.) Repeat steps 3 and 4.
8.) Stop recording data with the Dewetron.
9.) Shut engine off.
10.)Store data for analysis.

8.0 REPORT

Report the voltage undershoot and overshoot as the EBL is applied and removed at both idle and 1500
rpm. Report the voltage undershoot and overshoot as power window motors are stalled and then
deenergized at both idle and 1500 rpm. Report the voltage overshoot and undershoot recorded as
engine rpm is varied between idle and approximately 2,500 rpm.

9.0 DEFINITIONS/ABBREVIATIONS/ACRONYMS

CDA Chrysler Diagnostic Analyzer (Software package for laptop)

EBL Electric backlite (rear window defroster)
RPM engine revolutions per minute
A amperes
mv millivolts
V volts
