9 Female
Reproductive Organs
POST-TEST. Write your answers here.
The female reproductive system produces the female egg cells necessary for
reproduction, called the ova or oocytes which can potentially be fertilized by sperm.
Next, it provides an environment for a fertilized egg to develop during pregnancy.
Lastly, it plays a special role in facilitating labor and childbirth.
2. Identify the internal parts of the female reproductive organs and give the
functions of each.
Vagina
The muscular canal that goes from the uterus to the outside of the body. During
birth, the baby passes through the vagina. Also called birth canal.
Uterus
Also called womb, an inverted pear-shaped muscular organ of the female
reproductive system, located between the bladder and the rectum. It functions to
nourish and house a fertilized egg until the fetus, or offspring, is ready to be
delivered.
Fallopian tube
Also called oviduct or uterine tube, either of a pair of long narrow ducts located in
the human female abdominal cavity that transport male sperm cells to the egg,
provide a suitable environment for fertilization, and transport the egg from the ovary,
where it is produced, to the central channel (lumen) of the uterus.
Ovaries
The ovaries produce and release eggs (oocytes) into the female reproductive tract at
the mid-point of each menstrual cycle. They also produce the female hormones
oestrogen and progesterone.
