HIGHWAYS AND BRIDGES ENGINIREENG

SECOND YEAR ( 2017 – 2018 )

CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY

Student Name:- Esmat Othman Ali

Stage & Group:- Second (B).

Test Name:- Moisture Content And Absorption Of Concrete Aggregate Test.

Test Date:- 4/11/2017.

No. of test:- “8”

1
scope:-
The properties of the aggregates which should be known to design a
concrete mix its moisture content and absorption. It is necessary in order to
determine the net water-cement ratio in a batch of concrete made with job
aggregate.

2
Principle Apparatus and material:-

1-Sensitive Balance.

2-Oven.

3-pan

4-sand

5-gravel

3
Specification:-
The amount of materials depends on the nominal maximum size of
aggregate as follows:-

N.M.S(mm) Weight Of Sample(kg)

4.75 0.5

9.5 1.5

12.5 2

19 3

25 4

37.5 6

4
Procedure:-
1-Prepare the container clean, record its empty weight (A).

2-Weigh the suitable sample of aggregate and keep it in a container.

3-The weight of the container with the gravel is (B).

4-Remove the cover, then put the sample in the oven at (105°C) for 24 hours.

5-Remove the sample forms the oven, then leave it for half an hour, and then
weigh it (C).

6-For absorption% repeat the same steps for the SSD sample.

5
Calculation & Results:-
Group B1 (Gravel):-
𝑩𝟏 − 𝑪𝟏
𝑴𝒐𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒕% = × 𝟏𝟎𝟎
𝑪𝟏 − 𝑨𝟏
𝟐𝟑𝟕𝟓 − 𝟐𝟑𝟔𝟐
𝑴𝒐𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒕% = × 𝟏𝟎𝟎
𝟐𝟑𝟔𝟐 − 𝟑𝟕𝟐
𝑴𝒐𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒕% = 𝟎. 𝟔𝟓%

Group B2 (Sand):-
𝑩𝟐 − 𝑪𝟐
𝑴𝒐𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒕% = × 𝟏𝟎𝟎
𝑪𝟐 − 𝑨𝟐
𝟏𝟓𝟔𝟎 − 𝟏𝟒𝟕𝟓
𝑴𝒐𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒕% = × 𝟏𝟎𝟎

Discussion:-
The aggregate result is affected by the weather, for example if the
temperature of the oven is less than 105OC for 24 hours the aggregate won’t be
the oven dry aggregate and it will have some water in the aggregate. It is
necessary to know the aggregate moisture content because in the order to
determine the net water-cement ratio in a batch of concrete made with job
aggregate. There are four states of aggregate moisture content (Oven dry, Air dry,
Saturated surface dry (SSD) and Damp). To adjust the water cement ratio
according to the moisture content and absorption of aggregate the aggregates
which should be known to design a concrete mix. In moisture content test we
take the weight of aggregate three times (first the aggregate sample that come,
second the aggregate sample after submerged in water for 24 hours and third
time when we put it after submerged in the water in the oven on 105OC for 24
hours). The moisture content in the Oven dry state is equal to zero. The moisture
content in the Saturated surface dry (SSD) state is equal to the absorption. The
moisture content in the Air dry state is less than the absorption.
