Positive Values and Qualities of a Community Health Nurse
1. What are your positive qualities and personal attributes as a student nurse that can be
helpful if you will be a CHNurse?
 Caring- The very essential and most important of all. As a student nurse, I make sure I show a
natural tendency to truly care about how my patients feel because it will have a significant
impact on them and to my success in the nursing field. This is very helpful in all nursing field
especially in community nursing because this is what they need and caring makes all the
difference to patients and community.

 Empathy- While still a student nurse, one attribute of mine is one that shows empathy to each
patient or to the community, making a true effort to put self in patients’ or family’s shoes. By
practicing empathy, nurses are more likely to treat their patients as “people” and focus on a
person-centered care approach, rather than strictly following routine guidelines.

 Good communication skills- Strong communication skills are critical characteristics of a

future nurse. As a student nurse, I make sure I effectively communicate with other nurses,
physicians, disciplines across other units, patients, and their families. Because I believe that
without the ability to interpret and convey communication correctly, medical errors are more
likely to occur, patients often feel neglected or misinformed, and the entire unit will feel the
impact.

 Willingness to learn- With technological improvements and breakthrough as a CHNurse

someday, we must prove to be successfully adaptive to provide the highest quality community
care possible. Improvements in education approaches can help foster successful learning
environments.

 Leadership- Exercising my leadership skills today in any role/level of organization shows a

willingness to grow and adapt at my own pace.

2. What are the areas that you need to improve on?

In my own experience while having duties in different areas in the hospital, I want to improve my
communication skills when it comes to the children. I can talk easily to the adults but in children, I admit
that I have a hard time adjusting and communicating with them. I believe this is important to enhance
because we need to come up with a strategy to communicate with them in the process they like and fits
them well. Another area I want to improve is my problem solving skills. I want to develop it so that when
a situation will occur and a problem solving skill is needed, I will be able to perform it.
3. What professional competencies do you need or develop to be a CHNurse?
 Ability to convey information effectively.
 Excellent reading comprehension.
 Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative
solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
 Ability to communicate information and ideas clearly in speaking and in writing so others will
understand.
 Problem sensitivity or the ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
 Demonstrate ability to apply knowledge and skills in research in different healthcare settings.
 Provide a safe working environment.
 Use principles of quality improvement and incorporates them into nursing practice.
 Apply strategies to promote health and prevent illnesses.
 Ensure consistent and continuous holistic quality of care.
