Pre-stressed
Bridge Beam Data Book
GREAT PRESTRESSED CONCRETE
BEAMS FOR THE BEST BRIDGES
ABM PRECAST SOLUTIONS SPECIALISE IN THE
PRODUCTION OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE
BEAMS ALONG WITH AN INNOVATIVE RANGE OF
PRECAST REINFORCED AND POST-TENSIONED
CONCRETE PRODUCTS

As the largest producer of prestressed bridge beams

in Britain we offer a comprehensive range of beam
profiles as well as complementary reinforced concrete
products developed and tailored to the needs of
individual projects.

We offer a comprehensive service to the UK civil

engineering sector with the capability to design and
manufacture a vast range of precast concrete weighing
up to 120 tonnes.

Working with leading civil engineers and designers,

we’re proud to be part of many of the country’s major
civil engineering projects. At our Nottinghamshire
plant, we bring together extensive practical experience
with technical know–how to ensure that we can deliver
innovative and competitive solutions in the most
challenging situations.

Precast concrete gets the job done faster – major

components can be factory produced simultaneously
with site preparation. On site, precast concrete
minimises the environmental impact of construction,
creating less noise, debris and pollution risk.

From our 24,000m² production facility in North

Nottinghamshire, we’re ideally placed to service the
UK’s civil engineering industry with the capability to
produce units weighing more than 120 tonnes and over
40m long.

Where flexibility, durability, ease of construction and

value engineering are the driving forces, ABM has the
Precast Solution.

This technical data book covers the key features of our

Prestressed beam range. Should you require additional
information, please contact us.

In addition to the range of prestressed bridge beams

described in this literature, ABM also offer a wide
range of bespoke precast concrete components for
bridge and other civil engineering applications. These
include containment parapets, cill beams and units
for deck edges, sea defences, rail maintenance depot
components, arch and portal frame bridge systems etc..
Prestressed Bridge Beams are at the heart of thousands of bridging solutions around the world.
ABM Precast Solutions offers a vast range of beam configurations to meet today’s complex
bridge construction demands.

14 ‘standard’ beam types and infinite ‘bespoke’ possibilities are available to span over 40 metres.

Prestressed Bridge Beams can be complemented with secondary cast on reinforced concrete

Applications and Features

Short to medium bridges (spans up to 23.5m). Narrow section reduces unit weights minimising lifting capacity
required. The complementary TE beam provides an edge detail able to support parapet loading with no need for
formwork and in-situ concrete. The unique ABM PT/PTE profile provides a cross-section offering significantly
more potential strand positions than the traditional T/TE sections.

BEAM

Casting the reinforced concrete stringcourse (parapet beam)

on to the outer Prestressed beam in a bridge deck can greatly
increase construction efficiency, simplify (or eliminate)
22 temporary works, reduce in-situ concreting and improve site
safety.

If required, expansion joints can be provided in full length

stringcourses.

SEPARATE RC UNITS STRINGCOURSES

BOX
Y YE W U TY TYE PT PTE SBB MY MYE M UM
BEAM

As an alternative to full length cast on stringcourses, sectional,

separate reinforced concrete units can be provided for installation
after the edge beams have been placed.

This detail is particularly suitable for U & W beam profiles.

PARAPETS - INTEGRAL CAST-ON

BOX
Y YE W U TY TYE PT PTE SBB MY MYE M UM
BEAM

Where rapid installation is key to successful construction a

complete cast-on parapet assembly can be provided as an
integral part of the deck edge beams.

A wide range of textured surface finishes is also available.

PARAPETS - SEPARATE, BOLT-ON CONNECTION

BOX
Y YE W U TY TYE PT PTE SBB MY MYE M UM

Where the use of in-situ concrete has to be minimised or

eliminated, fixings can be cast in to precast beams to allow a
bolt-on connection for the Parapet Unit.

PARAPETS - SEPARATE, BRICK SANDWICH

BOX
Y YE W U TY TYE PT PTE SBB MY MYE M UM
BEAM

Where a masonry finish is required to both sides of a

containment parapet on a bridge deck edge, the ‘Brick
Sandwich’ technique can be used. In this construction the
brickwork forms an integral part of the containment and acts
as formwork for the structural concrete core.

This detail is commonly used in rail overbridges and is

constructed in accordance with Network Rail instructions
and BS6779-4:1999, as detailed on Network Rail standard
drawings.

and UM beams these can be factory fitted over the beams to
speed on site construction and improve safety by reducing
working at height.

DIABLO HOLES / COUPLERS

BOX
Y YE W U TY TYE PT PTE SBB MY MYE M UM
BEAM

To facilitate transverse reinforcement of diaphragm sections

or whole decks (in-fill construction) rebar couplers can be
provided in line with through holes in internal beams (known
as ‘Diablo’ holes).

These connections are typically spaced at 600mm centres

and can be sized and shaped to accommodate a range of
rebar configurations including skews. To avoid the risk of
longitudinal cracking it is not recommended that the centres
of these connections are closer than 400mm from the
beam end.

Cast-in fixings can be provided in Prestressed beams for

temporary works connections. A wide range of threaded
sockets and proprietary falsework connections is available.

PARAPET ANCHOR CAST-INS

BOX
Y YE W U TY TYE PT PTE SBB MY MYE M UM
BEAM

Where steel or aluminium parapet systems are used in

conjunction with cast-on stringcourses, parapet mounting
anchor bolt-clusters can be cast-in. This option eliminates the
need for post-drill fixing and speeds installation efficiency.

DESIGNERS’ NOTES

1. Prestressed beams can be used for a large variety of structures to provide high quality, economic, time
saving, durable solutions. These include, but are not restricted to:

− Highway bridges
− Railway bridges
− Footpath & Bridleway bridges
− Cut & cover tunnels
− Ramps to car & bus parks
26 − Large spans within buildings

2. The type of prestressed beam most suitable for a structure will be dependent upon a number of factors
such as:

− Desired Span
− Loading
− Available construction depth
− Requirements for open or closed soffit to deck
− Desire to construct without movement joints or bearings in continuous and integral structures
− Accessibility for lorries to deliver and cranes to place beams

3. Design considerations:

a. Supports to beams can be by use of bearings such as elastomeric pads or strips with sliding
surfaces for larger spans to enable movement and dowels for resisting horizontal forces.
Proximity of bearings to the beam ends should be considered in accordance with the relevant
design code.

b. Beam ends can be made continuous with adjacent spans or substructure to provide moment,
shear and axial transfer.

c. Beam lengths and cross sections will be manufactured in accordance with tolerances of
relevant design codes. Allowance will be made in manufacture for the elastic shortening of the
beams due to prestress.

d. Prestress will result in a pre-camber of the beams which should be taken into consideration
in the structure layout. Due to variations in the elasticity of concrete with age, strength and
climate the pre-camber will vary but the order of magnitude can be predicted.

e. Skews to beam ends should be avoided where possible but can be made up to 45° if necessary.

f. Cast in items to the faces of beams can normally be accommodated but should be discussed
with ourselves at the earliest opportunity to avoid clashes with strand and reinforcement.

g. Fittings or reinforcement projecting from the beam sides or through the soffit should be
avoided.

h. Straight reinforcement projecting from the beam ends can normally be provided for
continuity.

i. Debonding of strands can be made to avoid unacceptable stresses near the beam ends and to
aid the design of beams requiring continuity at their ends.

j. The sides and soffits of the beams will normally be as cast from steel moulds. The top concrete
surface will be a suitable finish to provide bond with in-situ concrete over.

k. Beams must be lifted using the proprietary lifters that will be cast in near the beam ends.
Bearers for stacking and transport should be at the same distance from the beam ends as the
lifters.
ADDITIONAL NOTES

BS EN ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System

ABM’s Quality Management System incorporates Quality Assurance that governs our design and
manufacturing procedures and practices, ensuring that every job is done right the first time and
consistently meets client and regulatory requirements.
27
The ABM QA Manual and QA Procedures comply with BS EN ISO 9001:2008.
Independent audits by international assessment, verification and certification body NQA provide UKAS
recognised accreditation for the scheme.

CE Marking
Rigorous Factory Production Control (FPC) measures are in place and independently audited to be in line
with the requirements for CE marking. Where harmonised European product standards are in place, CE
marking is applied.

Concrete finishes

Unless specifically agreed otherwise, the finishes to prestressed beams will be as follows:-
- Soffit - F3
- External faces - F2
- Internal faces - F1
- Upper face - U1 with grit-blast treatment to remove laitance

Beam delivery

Specialist delivery vehicles are used for delivery of Prestressed bridge beams, however, during transport
of larger prestressed beams it may be necessary to support the beam at points up to 20% of the beam
length from the end. The consulting engineer/beam designer must satisfy themselves that the beam
design is such that any loads imparted on the beam by this method of support are not detrimental. Should
ABM incur any additional costs as a result of this these will be charged in accordance with our normal
terms and conditions for additional works.

Loading assumption notes

− Eurocodes in conjunction with the relevant UK Annexes

− LM1, LM2 and the applicable range of LM3 (SV vehicles) road vehicle live loading models are applied
− 100mm to 250mm surfacing thickness (depending on beam type)
− Grade C50/60 concrete used for prestressed beams, grade C40/50 used for in-situ concrete
− 120 year design life
− Exposure classes XC3/4 and XD1
− Total beam lengths are at least 500mm greater than the clear span
