1.0 INTRODUCTION
E-Waste stands for Electronic Waste. Broadly e-waste refers to consumers or businesses
electronic equipment and devices at the end of useful life and due to be discarded. E-waste
includes items such as computer equipment, mobile phones, televisions and industrial
appliances and household items. Many electronic devices contain hazardous chemicals. If
they aren’t disposed of safely, those chemicals can pose a safety hazard to people, animals
and the environment. In addition to contaminating soil, hazardous wastes can pollute the
air and leach into water sources. E-waste is listed as scheduled waste because it contains
harmful components that can affect human health and environment. Improper electronic
waste disposal can be dangerous to all of us in the long run.
E-waste has become a global issue because of its tremendous growth of demands on
electrical and electronic equipment as people would discard their old and broken appliances
at the landfill instead of using the right channels due to the lack of awareness on the
importance of e-waste recycling. There are 50 million tonnes of e-waste produced
worldwide with 1 million tonnes in Malaysia. In year 2020 alone, Malaysia has generated
5.5 million pieces of e-waste which is 3.5 times higher the amount recorded in year 1995.
There are only 25% of e-waste recycled and the rest is estimated to be worth RM 3 billion.

2.0 PROJECT CONTENT
SECTION A – PROJECT PROPOSAL
Introduction
We would like to raise awareness regarding the importance of recycling e-waste as e-waste
is one of the faster waste streams growing in the world in terms of volume. This project is
prepared by our five team members which are Syamsul Bari’ah Binti Baihaqi, Sathyswaran
a/l Jaganathan, Narendran a/l Rajandran, Solomoan Premdass a/l Anthony Dass and
Jiventhiran a/l Anandarajan.
Objectives
The objective of this event is to raise the awareness of the public regarding the importance
of recycling e-waste and highlight on the how to recycle e-waste properly for 4 weeks with
a budget of RM 200.
Project Method
In this project, we will create an awareness video regarding the importance of recycling e-
waste. Then we will hold a virtual event related to e-waste by invite people to join us in
recycling e-waste at authorize recycling center and create the questionnaire survey to know
the public understanding level of e-waste.

SECTION B – SCOPE OF WORK
OH MY E-WASTE – Don’t Throw Your Future Away
Project Statement
To organize an e-waste recycling event entitled Oh My E-Waste on social media platform.
This event will serve as a platform to raise public awareness on the importance of recycling
e-waste.
Objectives
The objectives of this project is to increase public awareness on the importance of e-waste
recycling and highlight how to dispose of and recycle e-waste properly in the right channels
in collaboration with relevant Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) to reduce the
amount of e-waste in Malaysia specifically in Shah Alam, Selangor. This project will be
held for 4 weeks with the allocation budget of RM 200.
Deliverables
1. Create an awareness video of E-Waste to increase the public awareness on the
importance of recycling e-waste.
2. Regularly update the importance of recycling e-waste and the current issue related to
e-waste and highlight the steps needed on how to recycle e-waste properly at the
authorized center licensed by Malaysia Department of Environment (DOE).
3. Create a questionnaire survey and quiz in order to know the public understanding level
on the importance of recycling e-waste.
5. Collect e-waste from UNISEL’s students and the community nearby by providing a
space for them to drop in their e-waste.

Task Splitting – The aim here is to take a large task and to split it down into two or more
smaller tasks each. This can happen more often than you think. For example, we use this technic
in most of the part in this project from gathering information about E-waste to launching the
virtual and collection event of E-waste and preparing a written report.
Shortening Lag Time Between Tasks – If tasks on the critical path include lag time between
them, reducing that lag time is an easy way to shorten the project duration. It will not cost any
amount of money and the risk is low. The difficulty with this approach is that the lag time is
often due to a dependency on other.
For example, lag time might indicate the delay to approach NGO for event collaboration and
received a reply from NGO. Moreover, the consequences of reducing the project duration
increases the risk of being late because reducing the slack of non-critical activities increasing
the likelihood of creating new critical paths. More critical paths increase the risk of the project
being late.

3.3 THE EVENT
There are two main events in this project which are Virtual Event and Collection Event. Virtual
event is consisting of questionnaire survey, quiz and sharing session whereas the collection
event is basically a mobile collection services. We managed to get 102 participants in the survey,
and 51 participants in the quiz. We also managed to collected 117 pieces of e-waste from local
community and family.

4.0 CONCLUSION
Throughout our event, we noticed that there are still many people who are not aware of the
existence of e-waste recycling despite the efforts of the government in creating a recycling
center. This is may due to the lack of marketing that promote the importance of e-waste
recycling. There are also not many recycling centers that accept e-waste because of its
inconvenience in disposal. Although there are several e-waste recycling centers operating, the
availability of pick-up service is limited to certain areas only.
Based on our survey, many people choose to keep the e-waste at their home because of the
emotional attachment to the product followed by the reparability cost. The e-waste then either
will be kept in the storage or eventually dumped in the bin.
As Malaysians' awareness of the importance of recycling e-waste is low, we must take proactive
action in promoting it to the public because e-waste is a global problem and can affect our
environment and health if there is improper disposal. The effort of recycling e-waste should be
starts now with our friend, family and community. Together we can save the earth, and become
our own hero.
