    Valve positioners are used to control the position of process control valves on P&IDs. The basic symbols for an intermediate solenoid control valve and process control valve on a P&ID include a rectangle to represent the valve body, a triangle to note the valve actuator, and a smaller rectangle attached to represent the positioner that controls the valve. Positioners provide an electronic signal to the actuator to open or close the valve to the desired position.
