The treatment capacity of the Cheonggyecheon STP was 150,000 ㎥/day, and the plant could handle
the sewage discharged by 1.3 million people living in the Cheonggyecheon basin of 5,600 ha. Activated
sludge process (ASP) was used for treatment
The Cheonggyecheon STP collected wastewater and stormwater through the intercepting sewers with
total length of 13.13 ㎞. The collected wastewater was pumped in the pumping station to be passed
through a series of treatment processes and then discharged into Jungnangcheon. The Cheonggyecheon
plant treated the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) of wastewater from 330 ppm to below 19 ppm
and the Suspended Solid (SS) from 330 ppm to below 30 ppm before discharging into the Han River.
The sewer coverage was 65.8% in 2003. Among 242 STPs, the influent strength of 102 STPs were less
than 50% of the design strength, and there was one faulty sewer every 8.6 m of the 5,332 ㎞ long
sewers. The sewer extension of 4,030 ㎞, which accounted for 6.3% of the total sewer extension
(68,196 ㎞) for 184 STPs, was to be maintained, and the sewer extension of 2,974 ㎞ for new 348 STPs
was to be constructed. Between 2002 and 2005, with the Comprehensive Measures on Sewer
Maintenance (CMSM), feasibility study was carried out in 166 cities and districts with 25.6 billion won
