(a) Give a brief account of the unusual "dramatic offering" that occurs in the story.

The term "books" refers to creative works, that is, novels, plays and collections of short stories,
which are on the recommended list in the English B syllabus.
(a) Show how the relationship between family members OR between a man and a woman
is affected by difficulties it encounters. ( 8 marks)
(b) · Discuss what these difficulties reveal about the characters involved in the relationship.
(12 marks)
16. Choose TWO texts in EACH of which a major character's freedom is restricted by another
character or group. With close reference to EACH of the TWO texts chosen:
(a) Briefly describe how the major character's freedom is restricted and explain how this
restriction affects the major character. (12 marks)
(b) Compare the ways in which the TWO major characters (one from each text) attempt to
free themselves from those restrictions. ( 8 marks)
17. "Heroism is revealed not only in brave, strong deeds, but also in the quiet endurance of hardship."
With this definition in mind, choose TWO texts and show how EACH text illustrates ONE kind
of heroism. (20 marks)
18. Choose TWO texts in EACH of which a major character is forced to accept the demands of
those in positions of power and authority. For EACH text:
(a) Briefly describe the nature of the demands made by those in positions of power and
authority. ( 6 marks)
(c) Compare the effects of his or her acceptance on the life of the major character.
( 8 marks)
(a) Identify and discuss the MAIN dream and/or aspiration of a major character.
(12 marks)
(b) Show how the pursuit of this dream and/or aspiration affects the life of the major
character and his or her friends. ( 8 marks)
20. Choose TWO texts in EACH of which a female character exerts a strong influence on another
person. For EACH text:
(a) Describe the strength of the female character, and explain how this strength enables her
to exert her influence. (12 marks)
(b) Discuss the way in which the other person is affected, taking care to indicate whether this
is a positive or negative influence. ( 8 marks)
21. Select TWO texts in EACH of which a major character is affected by something that happened
in the past. For EACH text:
(a) Describe the past event that affects the major character. ( 6 marks)
(b) Describe how the major character's past shapes his or her present. ( 6 marks)
(c) Compare how the TWO characters deal with the past. ( 8 marks)
