(a) Briefly identify the criticisms of Atticus' s parenting that are raised by Miss Maudie, Aunt

(c) Relate TWO instances in which Atticus, by his example, teaches his children an

8. Bob Ewell is responsible for Tom Robinson being on trial.


(a) Briefly describe Bob Ewell, relate the accusation he has brought against Tom Robinson,
and explain his motive. ( 6 marks)
(b) Explain why telling the truth in his own defence is likely to make matters worse for Tom
Robinson. ( 4 marks)
(c) Outline how Atticus builds his defence, and then comment on the court's verdict,
explaining what it tells us about Maycombe society. (10 marks)

13. Considering the poem "Sometimes in the Middle of a Story":

(c) Discuss the significance of the word "middle" in the poem, taking care to show the
different ways in which it is being used. ( 8 marks)

(a) Describe the landscape in detail and suggest why it takes on the character that it does.

is affected by difficulties it encounters. ( 8 marks)

(b) · Discuss what these difficulties reveal about the characters involved in the relationship.

16. Choose TWO texts in EACH of which a major character's freedom is restricted by another
character or group. With close reference to EACH of the TWO texts chosen:

(a) Briefly describe how the major character's freedom is restricted and explain how this
restriction affects the major character. (12 marks)

(b) Compare the ways in which the TWO major characters (one from each text) attempt to
free themselves from those restrictions. ( 8 marks)

17. "Heroism is revealed not only in brave, strong deeds, but also in the quiet endurance of hardship."

With this definition in mind, choose TWO texts and show how EACH text illustrates ONE kind
of heroism. (20 marks)

18. Choose TWO texts in EACH of which a major character is forced to accept the demands of
those in positions of power and authority. For EACH text:

(a) Briefly describe the nature of the demands made by those in positions of power and
authority. ( 6 marks)

(b) Show why acceptance of these demands becomes necessary. ( 6 marks)

(c) Compare the effects of his or her acceptance on the life of the major character.

(b) Describe how the major character's past shapes his or her present. ( 6 marks)
