International Business and Trade

In our output we are required to interview a local business person to determine his/her

attitude toward world trade. Since I am currently located in Camp 7, a mountain barangay where

local businesses are almost the same which is convenience store, I have decided to pick the

biggest store in our area. Marnie Sari-Sari Store is owned by Marnie Oralde, 43 years old is four

times bigger than the smallest store, and the longest running local business in our area.

To determine her attitude towards world trade I asked her some questions. First, I asked

her if she has any idea on what is world trade all about. She honestly replied “wala gyud dong”,

but also asked me “kanang import ug export na?”. Second, I also asked her if in her entire life

did she ever planned to go abroad. She confidently said “Yes dong!, magyaya ta ko sa Hong

Kong”. Third, I asked her if she want to expand her business to be like a 7-Eleven?, immediately

replied “kanindot ana dong, wala man tay kwarta gud, pero basin puhon” and then laugh. Fourth,

I asked how she see her business 20 years from now, and answered “gapadayon gihapon ug gi

padangan na sa akong anak” Lastly, I asked her if she is willing to study international business

and bring her business outside the Philippines. She said “tiguwang naman ko dong, akong mga

anak seguro pwede pa”

Since this is a sari-sari store I presumed that they only bought their products in a grocery

store. These products are from the seller’s perspective on what are the basic goods needed by the

people in his/her area. It usually includes detergents, toiletries and food products such as rice,

canned goods, noodles and condiments (salt, sugar, soy sauce, etc.) and the like.

After the interview I noticed that the owner of the biggest store in our area doesn’t have

enough idea on what is international marketing all about, aside from import and export. Next, I

also notice that she has a background on planning to go abroad which shows courageous attitude.
Also, she is positive on her business and even planned to expand but doesn’t have enough

capital. Then she is also optimistic to the extent that her business will still operate in the long

run. Finally, the owner herself doesn’t want to study international marketing anymore because of

her age, but trusting her son to make it possible of bringing their business internationally.

The attitude of the business owner in commercial experiences is way better than her

attitude towards international trade. The level of confidence is not the same since she only had

limited knowledge. She possessed positive attitudes towards her business, the reason why it is

still operating until now despite of growing competitors. These positive attitudes are also

necessary if she will decide to expand her business and go international trade, but she must not

limit to this attitudes.
