THE LUCKY SPOT by Beth Henley

Cassidy:
Well, I guess I should tell you that I broke
off the engagement. Tore off the ring. It's gone.
The thing is I can't ever awaken any love in him for me -
'cause,
well, he's got you in his blood; you're his partner. See I'm
not
stupid. I know people getting married are supposed to be in
love with
the people they're getting married to. You don't want
somebody just
marrying you on the rebound. And it's funny but it makes
me feel
light-hearted, 'cause now I see, well, maybe love isn't a
made-up lie
like Santa Claus or something. Maybe it can be true. And if
it's true,
maybe I can find someone I'll shoot off guns for and find
someone
who'll hold my face and tell me, please, please, please. Or
maybe he'll
just, I don't know, give me a slice of watermelon and pick
out all the
seeds. And then when you have this love inside you it
doesn't matter if
your father was a lord in a castle or a bum on the road or a
murderer
in a cage. It don't matter. It just don't matter.
