Explain de Broglie’s hypothesis of matter waves? What is the ratio 2+4 CO1
1
of the kinetic energy of an electron to that of a proton if their de
Broglie wavelengths are equal?

Explain Ultraviolet catastrophe and Planck’s correction to 3+3 CO1

2
classical radiation formula

An electron moves with a constant velocity 1.1 x 106 m/s. If the 6 CO1
velocity is measured to a precision of 0.1 per cent, what is the
3
maximum precision with which its position could be
simultaneously measured. (note:  = 3.14)

width 1 Å, calculate (i) the separation between the two lowest
energy levels; (ii) the frequency and wavelength of the photon

A step index fibre is made with a core of index 1.52, a diameter 3+3 CO6
8 of core is 29 µm and a fractional difference index of 0.0007. It is
operated at a wavelength of 1.3 µm. Find (a) The fibre V-

9 Explain Forward and reverse bias PN junction with neat 4+2 CO7
diagram? Write down two applications each?
A p-n photodiode has a quantum efficiency of 30% at a 2+2+2 CO7
wavelength of 0.8 µm. Calculate (i) the responsivity at 0.8 µm
10 (ii) the received optical power if the mean photocurrent is 10 -6 A
and (iii) the corresponding number of received photons per
second at this wavelength.

1
➢ De Broglie proposed that if the radiations could possess dual nature, matters could
also possess dual nature.
➢ A particle of mass (m), moving with velocity (v) could behave like a wave under
suitable conditions. And the corresponding wave related to that matter is
called matter wave
➢ De Broglie’s wavelength for matter wave is given by: λ = h/p

Numerical aperture
Numerical aperture (NA) of the fiber is the light collecting efficiency of the fiber and is a
measure of the amount of light rays can be accepted by the fiber.

Acceptance angle
It is the maximum angle of a ray (against the fiber axis) hitting the fiber core which allows
the incident light to be guided by the core.

Forward bias junction

When the p-type is connected to the positive terminal of the battery and the n-type to the
negative terminal then the p-n junction is said to be forward-biased. When the p-n junction is
forward biased, the built-in electric field at the p-n junction and the applied electric field are
in opposite directions. When both the electric fields add up the resultant electric field has a
magnitude lesser than the built-in electric field. This results in a less resistive and thinner
depletion region. The depletion region’s resistance becomes negligible when the applied
voltage is large.
Applications
1. Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)
2. Field effect tranistors

Reverse bias junction

Connecting the p-type region to the negative terminal of the battery and the n-type region to
the positive terminal corresponds to reverse bias. It will increase the junction barrier and
thereby offer a high resistance to the current flow through the junction. This type of bias is
known as reverse bias.

Applications

1. Rectifiers
2. voltage regulators
3. Zener diodes
