MINT: ¿The New Kid On The Block?

1. Why does Jim O´Neill consider the MINT countries as the new kid on the block or
the new emerging economies?

2. Which are the áreas of concern of the MINT countries?

3. ¿Do you think the MINT are going to replace the BRICS? Why or why not?

According to Jim O'Neill, the MINTS as a block of new emerging economies arises
mainly because demography is a fundamental factor and these countries that make up this
block have the human resources of workforce to contribute to economic growth. And when
this resource is exploited sufficiently, there can be positively shocking results. In other
words, this is a great advantage over the BRICS. For example, China is going through a
crisis because its population is aging. And this means that its economy slows down.

In the same way, this bloc is characterized by having an advantage in geographical

positions, finding neighbors that can open the doors for them commercially, as is the case
of Indonesia and Mexico, which have China and the USA as powers on their borders
respectively. For its part, Nigeria would come to benefit from having its neighbors as future
trading partners. And last Turkey, being connected from east to west, has good tools in the
development of its commercial activities.

And lastly and most importantly, it is the production of raw materials, and the
MINTs have a broad development in this area because most of their economies are
sustained in this sector with the exception of Turkey.

However, this bloc has to pay more attention to the reorganization of basic
institutions that promote tasks that contribute to their growth and political and social
consolidation. This with the objective of avoiding corruption scandals that lead to society
losing credibility in these control entities.

It is also worth mentioning a very important issue such as the provision of basic
services in order to improve the education and health of each inhabitant. As a result, they
would have an improvement in productivity and the workforce would be in optimal
conditions.

However, with a prepared workforce, much attention would have to be paid to

infrastructure to accelerate production processes and carry out a continuous acceleration of
the economy.

In conclusion, the BRICS will end up being displaced by the MINTs, as soon as
they commit and have the will to reform their policies in social and economic spheres, and
take advantage of the advantage they have now that the BRICS economies are slowing
down. Then is the time when they can take command as emerging economies and position
themselves appropriately.
