PROFICIENCY TESTING PROGRAM

METROLOGY IN CHEMISTRY LABORATORY

RESEARCH CENTER FOR CHEMISTRY – LIPI 2013
COMMODITY: PHTHALATE BUFFER SOLUTION (BPT)
PHOSPHATE BUFFER SOLUTION (BPH)

Technical Instruction

To ensure that results from this program can be analyzed properly, participants are asked to
adhere carefully to the following instructions.

GENERAL

1. Each participant will receive:

• 1 (one) document of ‘Technical Instruction of RCChem Proficiency Testing-LIPI 2013’
for Phthalate Buffer Solution (BPT) and Phosphate Buffer Solution (BPH) including
form 1 (Reporting format) and form 2 (Measurement uncertainty).
• 1 (one) bottle of 250 mL Phthalate Buffer Solution (BPT) sample and 1 (one) bottle
of 250 mL Phosphate Buffer Solution (BPH) sample.

• 1 (one) bottle of 100 mL phthalate standard buffer solution and 1 (one) bottle of
100 mL phosphate standard buffer solution.

2. Proficiency testing samples are Phthalate Buffer Solution (BPT) and Phosphate Buffer
Solution (BPH) that are separately packed in 250 mL polyethylene bottles. Each bottle
contains of 250 mL sample solution. The two samples have different codes:

 BPT13 (phthalate buffer solution)

 BPH13 (phospate buffer solution)

3. Each bottle of BPT13 and BPH13 has a specific number, example No.A01. Each
laboratory will get two bottles of BPT13 and BPH13 with different number.
4. The samples should be stored at 10oC, but if this condition is not possible they are
allowed to be stored at room temperature. Avoid to store the samples near strong acids
or bases.
5. The test parameter of this proficiensy testing is pH.

SAMPLES

1. Information about the samples:

 BPT13 was prepared from pottasium hydrogen phthalate (C8H5KO4)
 BPH13 was prepared from the mixture of pottasium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4)
and disodium hydrogen phosphate (Na2HPO4).

2. pH range of the samples are shown on Table 1

Table 1. pH range of the samples.

No. Sample Code pH Range
1. BPT13 4.00 – 5.00
2. BPH13 6.00 – 7.00

ANALYSIS

1. Use two-point calibrations to calibrate the pH meter according to the manual of the
instrument.

2. Participants are expected to use standard buffer solution pH 4.00 and pH 6.86 prepared
by RCChem-LIPI to calibrate the pH meter, or may use other standard buffer solution
which commonly used by the laboratory.

3. After opening, the samples have to be tested immediately. The samples can be stored
back to the suggested storage condition to avoid from damage.

4. The pH measurement must be conducted at 25oC, and repeat by 4 (four) replications.

5. Participants are expected to follow the instruction in the form 2 to estimate the
measurement uncertainty.
RESULTS

1. Report the results by including the measurement uncertainty in the form 1 (Reporting
format).

2. Report the measurement uncertainty for each result as expanded uncertainty at 95%
confident level in the form 2 (Measurement uncertainty).

3. Submit the completed result performance to proficiency testing provider to email

up.ppkimia2013@gmail.com.
