1 FOREWORD
This standard has been developed by the NORSOK Standardisation Work Group.
2 SCOPE
This standard describes the overall design principles for the drilling facilities on a
production platform. This standard does not cover specific down hole drilling
operations.

5 FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS
5.1 General
The main objectives are to optimise the design and operations of drilling facilities with
respect to utilisation, operational efficiency, life cycle cost and acceptable safety levels.
Two classes of drilling facilities has been defined; class I for wells up to appr. 6500m
and class II for wells up to appr. 10.000m.
The intention of defining two classes is to optimise between the two principal
requirements of:
a) drilling all ranges of wells, and
b) having a standardised design.
5.3.1 General
The drilling facilities shall be designed to be operated and maintained with minimum
manning levels.
Complexity of the systems and equipment, and the amount of equipment, shall
therefore be kept low.
5.3.2 Regularity
The operation of the drilling facilities shall obtain a regularity of 98% with respect to
equipment and maintenance down time.
It shall be possible to perform well intervention operations through the drill floor
during the drilling phase, if the well-bay design does not allow for direct access.

The back-up power source shall supply minimum 500kW. It shall at least be possible to
The drilling facilities shall include all systems that are required to successfully drill the
platform wells. These systems shall include:
Functional requirements to the above systems are described in the NORSOK Standard
System and Service Data Sheets.
Space requirements for a cuttings disposal (e.g. injection) system shall be considered.

• HVAC
• Hydraulic power
• Hot water, high pressure washdown system
5.6.1 General
All work areas in connection with drilling activities shall be arranged so as to ensure
totally adequate safety for personnel and operations, working environment and
pollution control, in accordance with NORSOK technical safety, environmental care,
working environment and project safety goals.
The layout of the drilling facilities shall take due consideration to areas that may be
critical to dropped objects, especially in connection with materials handling.
The layout shall ensure that maintenance and service can be carried out in an
ergonomically efficient way.
There shall be sufficient dry and heated stores for drilling equipment and spare parts.
Relevant transportation/handling facilities shall be provided.
The drilling offices shall be classified a safe area with optimum access to all areas of
the drilling facilities, especially the drill floor. The following office facilities shall as a
minimum be available for the drilling personnel:
A combined mud lab. including a work desk shall be located close to the mud pits.

All necessary utilities shall be available close to the specific equipment, including
temporary communications equipment.
5.7 Interfaces
For a Wellhead platform concept the supply of utilities, safety and communication
systems shall be given considerations.
The lower skidding structure shall adapt to the main skid beams that are 600-1000mm
wide and raised 200-500mm above the deck level.

All drains from the drillfloor and substructures shall be discharged to drain points that
are located in the main platform structure as shown on the principal sketch below:

_____________________________________________________________________________
Drilled cuttings shall be discharged to a cuttings chute which is located in the platform structure
as shown on the principal sketch.
Platform cranes shall give combined coverage of all areas for material movement, to and
between the various drilling facility laydown areas, the piperack and the drill floor. The cranes
shall also be capable of providing adequate lifting and reach capacity over all well slots.
5.7.3 Workshops
The workshops for welders, electricians etc. shall be part of the platform facilities (i.e. share the
use of platform workshops).
