After record ing a tape with equaiation, you can return the sound to normal by turing on tis switeh withthe same equalization setting, USING THE EQUALIZER CONTROLS “The graphic equalizer gives you precise control over particular bands ‘of froquancies. You can rise or reduce the volume leva in each band 10 obtain many diferent affocts. There are several practical uses for ‘a graphic equalizer, as described below, (1. COMPENSATING FOR SPEAKER OR PHONO CARTRIDGE RESPONSE Most speakers and phono cartridges have peaks and dips in theie ‘requency response. The equalize can bo used to compensstofor these iregulartis. 2] COMPENSATING FOR ROOM ACOUSTICS Aroom’s zo, furnishings, and the speaker system position wil affect ‘the acoustic response, Try adjusting the equalizer contol to achieve ‘abalanced sound that i not excessively tight or boomy. Rooms furishad with carpets, curains, ond ste funiture wil absorb ‘sound waves, Raise tho lvel at 63Hz and 2kH2 to recover lost bass and weble Fooms having exposed hord surfoces wil reflect sound waves, Try ‘aising the level at 125He to achieve mere balanced response. ‘These aro only suggestions. Each room is different, and the sound changes with your istening positon 2¢ wel ACTIVE EQUALIZATION — COLORING THE SOUND Professional recording engineers use graphic equalrrs to bring out particular instruments and to “color” the sound by emphasizing particular tones ‘You too can actively equalize the music by adjusting the equalizer controls For example, boosting the level at 63Hz wil give a bass drum more punch, Boosting the level at TkHz wil ring the vocals forward, edeing ‘move presance. Boosting the level at 8k: wil crate a bghterevmbal ‘sound The harmonics of each instrument are aso important, so tonal qualities wil change even when you adjust equalizer conto for frequencies ‘outside of the instrument's fundamental range Nore: To protect speakers from overload damage, do not raise ampltier volume excessively when hoasting the able frequencies. © Cymbals @ Trombone @ Soprano @ Precolo Ato @ Fite Tenor @ Alto clarinet Baritone © Tenor saxophone © Bass B Oboe © Viotn © Englich horn @ Ceo ® Contrabass. © Guitar © Piano B Electric Organ ® Trumpet MAKING EQUALIZED RECORDINGS ‘Special effects Many interesting, if not musical, 30 possible. For exam: plo, you can create teehoneike sound by eising the lve t SOOH2, ‘kHz, and 2kHz, while lowering all the other frequency levee Preventing feedback during mixing play When mixing a microphone with enother source, you may notice ‘coustc fovdback or “howling.” This canbe prevented by lowering ‘the level tthe frequency where the feedback occurs. This canbe done ‘during recording 2s wel as playback. ‘Making portable and car stereo tapes ‘Specialy equalzed recordings can be made for your car stereo system ‘oF fora portable music system. Simply boost those frequency levels that seem tobe lacking in your other system, and reduce the level of ftequencles that soom excessive Noise reduction ‘You can reduce treble hiss by boosting the high frequencies ina stopped patter during recording, and then using the reverse switch to lower ‘the some frequoncies during playback. > Frequency iH) 44 TROUBLESHOOTING Incorrect operations ara often mistaken for rouble and malfunctions.
