Lesson: Lewis Dot Structures

What do you want students to learn by the end of your lesson?(Learning Objectives)
I want my students to learn how to draw a Lewis dot structure for a molecule given its
empirical formula. This will involve:
 Finding an element’s number of valence electrons by looking at a periodic table
 Understanding the octet rule
 Understanding covalent bonds and lone pairs

What will the lesson cover? What activities will you use? (Teaching Objectives)
This lesson will cover how to use Lewis dot structures to represent molecules in chemistry. I
will begin by introducing the purpose behind these structures and then walk through two
examples of drawing a dot structure from a chemical formula. For the second example, I will
ask students to help me with parts of the problem-solving process. Finally, I will challenge
students to draw a Lewis dot structure for a new molecule from scratch to assess their
learning.

What prior knowledge is needed/expected for this lesson?

Basic understanding of atomic structure (i.e. where protons, neutrons, and electrons reside in
an atom) is expected for this lesson, as well as familiarity with the organization of the periodic
table.

How do you know students have learned the topic?(Assessment)

I will ask students to draw the Lewis dot structure for a molecule I have not shown them
before from scratch. I will check to make sure the structure has the correct number of
electrons and that each atom (except hydrogen) follows the octet rule.

Materials Needed?
I will be screen sharing the periodic table and my work drawing structures from my laptop.
Students do not need anything besides internet connection and something to draw with.
