Digital Google Slides Activity: For The ANSWER KEY, Click Here!
This digital Google Slides activity helps students to understand how the word equation, chemical equation, and
model of a reaction are related to one another. This activity supports NGSS MS-PS1-1 (Develop models to
describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures.) and MS-PS1-5 (Develop and use
a model to describe how the total number of atoms does not change in a chemical reaction and thus mass is
conserved.). Students should have been introduced to the basic structure of a chemical equation (reactants
yield products), as well as have a basic understanding that atoms bond together and rearrange in chemical
reactions.
On the first slide of the activity, students review terms by dragging words from a word bank to label the
types of equations and parts of an equation in a sample problem. The following slide includes directions for the
activity. The next 7 slides each contain a different chemical reaction shown as a word equation, a chemical
equation, and a model reaction. Students will read the word equation and use the chemical equation to
complete the model reaction and count the number of atoms on each side of the equation. The activity is
scaffolded so that some parts of the model reaction are shown for certain problems. The equations become
more complex and the last problem is a challenge problem! To differentiate this activity for more advanced
students, you could Make a Copy of the Student Slides and delete some of the given parts of each problem.
