MUNRO COLLEGE FORM 4 TRANSPIRATION WORKSHEET

FULL NAME OF STUDENT : ___________________________________________ DATE: May ___, 2020

ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Transpiration in plants is affected by relative humidity.

a. How does increasing the relative humidity affect the rate of transpiration? Explain your answer.

c. List three other factors that affect the rate of transpiration. (3)

2. An experiment was conducted to determine the rate of transpiration in a plant using the change

in mass method.

The set up of the experiment is shown along with the results of the experiment.

a. Identify the substance that is usually placed at A ( 1 mark)

b. What name is given to the laboratory apparatus labeled B? ( 1 mark)

c. Calculate the change in mass. ( 1 mark)

3. A shoot was cut from a healthy willow tree, and fitted into a simple ‘bubble potometer’- which
measures the rate of transpiration. The same shoot was used for four experiments, in the
conditions described here:

TRIAL CONDITIONS TEMPERATURE WIND RELATIVE HUMIDITY LIGHT (Lx)

(0C) (m/s) (%)
A Open lab 22 0.2 35 1200
B Lab cupboard 21.5 0.1 37 0
C Outside 20.5 4.8 88 1500
D Lab and heater 28 0.3 32 1220

In each condition, the bubble was timed over 100mm and the time taken to do so was recorded. Three
timings were done in each condition, to improve reliability.

The results are shown here:

TRIAL Times for bubble to move 100 mm Average Average

1st (s) 2nd (s) 3rd (s) Time (s) Speed (mm/s)
A 81 79 80
B 163 165 164
C 63 59 58
D 23 22 278

a. Which trial represents an anomaly in the results (that is, a figure which doesn’t fit)? _____ (1)

Eliminate it from the calculations that you will perform in part b of the question.

b. Calculate the average times, and speeds and fill them in. (6 marks)

Note: Give your answers for the rate correct to two decimal places
