Read text 2 squirrel. Answer the questions part B

1. 140,000 red squirrels are left in UK.

2. Grey squirrels
3. Reasons:
- Size. Red squirrels live high up in trees, whereas greys spend more of their time on
the ground. This means that any reduction in forest habitat greatly affects the red
squirrel population.
- Its ability to use food provided by humans. Like the fox, the grey squirrel can survive
in an urban environment because of its intelligence and adaptability.
- The other problem for the red squirrel is disease. Both squirrels carry the parapox
virus. While this does not seem to affect grey squirrels, it is fatal to reds.
- There does not seem to be much we can do to help red squirrels survive. Some
politicians support destroying populations of grey squirrels but this would be seen as
cruel by most people in Britain.

Part 5

1. Because grey squirrels are considered pests in woodlands, where their destructive nature
leads them to strip bark away from trees.
2. Red squirrels.
3. Because red squirrels have been successfully introduced from other countries and they
could be effectively protected in places like the Isle of Wight and Anglesey, where there
are no grey squirrels.
4. I think because the red squirrels are rare and the general public wanted to see them. So,
they needed to ensure that the reds were visible to help the ongoing support for the
campaign. And, may be they don’t like grey squirrels. It's an offence to introduce them
and there are tales of the ferry being turned back to repatriate a furry grey stowaway to
the mainland.
