First Reading Genesis 22:1-2, 9-13, 15-18 Exodus 20:1-17
Second Reading Romans 8:31-34 1 Corinthians 1:22-25
Gospel Mark 9:2-10 John 2:13-25
PSALM RESPONSE: I will walk in the presence of the Lord
In the land of the living.
GOSPEL ACCL: Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ!
From the shining cloud, the Father’s voice is heard:
This is my Beloved Son, hear Him.
Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ!
GOSPEL: Jesus took with him Peter and James and John and led them up a
high mountain where they could be alone by themselves. There in their
presence He was transfigured: His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than
earthly bleacher could make them. Elijah appeared to them with Moses; and
they were talking with Jesus. Then Peter spoke to Jesus. “Rabbi”, he said, it is
wonderful for us to be here; so let us make three tents, one for You, one for
Moses and one for Elijah”. He did not know what to say; they were so
frightened. And a cloud came, covering them in shadow; and there came a
voice from the cloud, “This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to Him”. Then
suddenly, when they looked around, they saw no-one with them anymore but
only Jesus. As they came down the mountain He warned them to tell no-one
what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. They
observed the warning faithfully, though among themselves they discussed what
“rising from the dead” could mean.
Did You Know?
 The words of the voice from the cloud echo the words from heaven at Jesus’
baptism, “You are my Son, the Beloved, my favour rests on You”. (Mark 1:11)
 The three disciples who witness Jesus’ glory in this episode are the same three
who will witness His agony on the Mount of Olives on the night before He died.
 Jesus is joined by Elijah and Moses in this episode. They represent the Prophets
and the Law, major section of the Hebrew Scriptures.
Symbols & Images
In scripture, mountains are often the places where God communicates with human
beings. Moses & Elijah both experienced God’s presence and action on mountain tops.
This Gospel has common elements with those stories – overshadowing cloud, awe and
majesty, brilliant clothing, fear - to describe the manifestation of God. Here God is
manifest in the person of Christ himself!

Holy Mass
If people knew the value of the Mass,
there would be policemen at the door,
to regulate the access to the Church,
every time that a Mass is celebrated.
St Padre Pio’s Spiritual Counsels
HUMILITY IS TRUTH
We are only truly humble
when we see ourselves as God sees us.
 Humility is seeing things as they really are and accepting them
without bitterness.
 We must never be discouraged by our faults.
 It is our failings that teach us our weakness.
 The remembrance of my faults humbles me and helps me never to
rely on my own strength, which is mere weakness.
 All we have to do is to humble ourselves, to bear with meekness
our imperfections. Herein lies true holiness.
 I acknowledge that ‘lights’ on my own nothingness do me more
good than ‘lights’ on matters of faith.
 In our fallen state, our own individual excellence is our most
treasured fancy.
 Unwillingness to be told our faults is a sure symptom of that
malady - pride - deepest in every one of us.
 We can measure our sanctity by our willingness to be told our
faults.
 The purpose of humiliation - it frees the soul from pride and self-
love so that it becomes a channel through which the love of Our
Lord can pass to others.
 We need to understand Christ’s humility in His Passion.
