students per section answered extremely observed in five independent

learning strategies.

The research concluded that grades can be a basis of the level of

performance demonstrated by students. In other words, learning is definitely

seen based on how students obtain their grades. The research concluded

also that the programmed instructional material, performance task, project/

outputs, assignment, and individual activities are extremely observed. It

means that these strategies can help come up with the independent learning.

Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

People nowadays in Laguna are more aware in pollution than the

previous ones. Rapid industrialization and advancement in technology have

added pollutants to the environment. The situation has become so grave that

the government cannot resist doing an action and can no longer tolerate the

deposition of pollutants. The wrong behaviors of people about in proper way

of throwing garbage are so risky for the environment. It may become a source

of any diseases and it can also destroy the beauty of nature, it affects the

ecosystem rather. Those wastes thrown in canal are highly avoidable to keep

it away from clogging, it will cause flashflood in some area that affect a great

even light rainfall.

Plastic bags are durable and mostly consumers are prepared in using

this for containing some stuff. It is use in groceries, restaurant and other

establishments. Plastics was most convenient to use, it is the primary needs

for carrying some things. The society, is now facing a big problem about

flood, there are so many families nearby the rivers affected the said problem.

There are no so many trees that capable to sip those rainfalls, and support

the land from flooding. The drainage systems do not function well due to the

wastes that block the canals; plastic were the major culprit in blocking it. That
AMA Computer College Santa Cruz Campus
Senior High School Department
_________________________________________
is why the government prohibited the use of plastics in respective

municipalities of the Philippines. One of these municipalities is Laguna; it also

listed to the provinces that affected of great flood. To suppress this problem,

some manufacturers produced alternative bags like paper bags and eco-bags

to distribute to the supermarkets and other establishments to lessen the use

of plastic bags.

Thus, the researchers aim to create and produce a new design of eco-

bags using new materials. This has necessitated eco-friendly approaches in

the production of textile materials which gains the attraction of the consumers.

Eco-friendly Textiles are those textiles that contain non-hazardous substance.

It will lessen the environmental problem about plastics, and also it will lessen

the numbers of plastics that will produces by manufacturers. Snake plants will

be the main materials for developing an eco-bags. The extraction of its fiber

will be a big help for designing it. The researchers want to develop a natural

fiber among fiber plants.

Background of the Study

In the past century, paper bags are already invented. It was used for

shopping and as gift bags. Papers, magazines, and newspapers were used

for creating paper bags as eco-friendly bags. It consumes a lot of the said

materials to produce one. Papers are most derived from wood and wood

Senior High School Department

derived from tree; it takes a lot of process just to produce a well and finest

paper. Basically, trees are the most affected when it comes of producing It.

Paper bags and plastic bags are not consistent for using as carry bags.

It may affect the ecosystem and the environment because of its chemical

substances that causes pollution and the materials to be used for creating it.

Whereas eco-bags release to become an optional carry bags for the

consumers. It is mostly made from fabric materials that can be used

repeatedly. Plastic bags are disposable bags and take enormous amount of

space to fill or dispose them. But there is no way to make the environment

clean when plastic bags used are not disposed properly, and another proper

solution is to switch to reusable types of bags that will not sit in landfills. Most

of the people are still not aware about how landfills are affecting the planet

and how much carbon footprints are produced with plastic bags usage.

Also the manufacturing plants in which carbon dioxide are produced,

large amount of toxic chemicals are produced which create pollution for

marine life and make the air dirty. To stop environmental pollution eco bags or

environmentally friendly bags are used. They are made from materials which

do not degrade the quality of the environment. They cause no harm to the

surrounding neither during production nor during disposal. They are either

make of cloth or jute or recycled plastic. These recycled plastic are both

washable and also hygienic.

AMA Computer College Santa Cruz Campus
Senior High School Department

They are popularly known as green bags also. Green stands for the

bags to be ecologically friendly. Most companies and organizations are

shifting to the use of eco bags so as to stop pollution. For people who use

and carry with them eco bags they are provided with bonus discounts. These

strategies are opted by most organizations so as to make people aware.

Some of the organization on the other hand is charging money for people who

want to carry their purchased stuff in thin plastic bags. These eco bags are

not only harmless but cost effective too at the same time.

However, the researchers aim to create a new design of eco-friendly

bags to lessen the use of plastics even paper bags. Eco green bags can offer

a stylish way for shopping and easily available with grocery shops. They are

much affordable and can be used many times. They are large ecofriendly

green bags which can hold more items and are more beneficial for shopping.

Plastic bags are usually very cheap and low quality, due to which they are

broken easily. But reusable bags offer ability to save environment and time as

well as much of the monetary benefits. People who have used reusable green

bags will prefer to use them again due to their affordability and durability

features. Both paper and plastic bags have great impact on environment.

According to US environmental protection agency, there are 5 percent of

plastic bags which are able to recycle. According to estimates, production of

AMA Computer College Santa Cruz Campus
Senior High School Department
_________________________________________
single paper bags require one gallon of water and creates much more

pollution.

Green bags are long lasting and their best feature of reusing more

times. Based on ecofriendly features and keeping in view the Go Green

approaches, eco green bags are highly recommended. Some of the

supermarkets have started their practices to pay to those who bring their

reusable bags. Reusable ecofriendly bags are also helpful because they can

be used for several times, an average green bag can be used for up to 371

times before disposed. Reusable green bags will decrease the wastes

quantity which is produced by people due to huge consumption of plastic

bags. One of the benefits by eco green bags is to oceans and seas. The

chemicals can cause illness and might be fatal death for all the living

creatures.

Though, eco-bags are already existed it will still be helpful to minimize

the production of fabric materials that derived from banana, water lilies, and

other forms of fiber plants. Snake plants are also part of the said groups; it will

be a big contribution as textiles raw materials for producing a lot of eco-bags.

Aside from that, it is also an eco-friendly product that can help to lessen

environmental problems. Snake plants as eco-bags will be useful as an

alternative carry bags for all consumers.

Report from Anis and Shahzad, 2005 shows that the regenerated

shoots of certain species such as Sansevieria Cylindrical in tissue culture

method displayed a unique characteristics of flattened green leaf blade

resembles Sansevieria Trifasciata in the beginning as compared to cylindrical

blade in parental plants but acquired normal leaf morphology after 18 months

of acclimation.

Like some other members of its genus Sansevieria trifasciata yields

bowstring hemp, where Africans used the fibers from plant to produce the

strings for their bows. It is popular as house plant as it is tough, tolerant of low

light levels and irregular watering as well as durable that can withstand a wide

array of conditions. It is now used predominantly as an ornamental plant,

indoors in cooler climates and outdoors in warmer climates/ it is also often

used as an air purifier because it claims has a tendency to absorb certain

poisonous substances (Wolverton et.al, 1989).

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter consists of all necessary related literature and studies

which contain gathered facts and readings that are relatively significant to the

proposed topic that was gathered through intensive search which strengthens

the quality of the study.

Related Literature

“A thick – skinned succulent, it can go for weeks without watering and

endures some overwatering as well as dry air and low light”.

According to Armstrong, W.P. (2010) that “Sanseviera trifasciata are

composed of clusters of fiber cells associated with the numerous vascular

bundles”.

According to Fiber plants (2010) that “people have been using plant

fibers for thousands of years in order to make clothing, rope, paper etc. whilst

all land plants contain fibers they are usually too short or too weak to be used

for anything other than paper-making, but there are well over 100 species

suitable for growing in temperate climates that produce long and relatively

strong fibers”.

Onlinelibrary.wiley.com (2012) emphasized that “Fibers from plant

sources have been used by man for many generations and there is increasing

interest in the potential use of such fibers from non-tree sources for various

applications. The various methods for processing fibers into valuable

industrials raw materials are detailed along with some prospective new

technologies.

The reading above are related to the present study since fibers and

snake plants are used as the raw materials.

According to Samson, et.al (2012) in their study entitled “acceptability

of snake plant as thread” appearance is the state, condition, manner or style

in which a person or object appears.

Appearance refers to the color appetizing quality of the product which

can be visualized. The instance of appearing; the look or outward aspect of a

person or thing, that appears, as defined by Hacks (2009)

According to Flavel (2008) that appearance is the act of becoming

visible.

According to Lenchner, D.E, et.al (2007) different person have varied

ways of reviewing the appearance of an object. Some considered the size or

shape while others are attracted by visual effects, still others are mesmerized

by color, initial reaction to an object depend mainly on visual observation

without the use of touch.

According to Claudio, et.al (2009) appearance is coming out of

different object through passing over the spectrum and to be viewed or being

visible by the eyes.

AMA Computer College Santa Cruz Campus

_________________________________________
Appearance refers to the color appetizing quality of the product that we

visualize, as defined by Erlinger (2008).

The readings above are related to the present study because in testing

the product, visual observation was used.

According to Meric (2008) defined durability as lasting for a long time,

especially sustaining damage or wear.

Durability of a material is the maximum amount of materials stressed

out that it can be subjected to the failure, stated by Don Stackhouse at DJ

Acrotech (2009).

According to Elena Tacio (2011) durability of a product has helped

leaped to the forefront of commerce and industry as a raw materials.

The quality of having the durability of a product is like having the

capacity to resist strain and stress, stated by Nombrefella (2007)

According to Philips (2010) the treatment or handling of a medium,

material is the durability of a product that will give success to it.

According to Gonzaga (2008) durability is continuous in the same

endurance.

The above statements are related to the present study because in

testing the capacity of its endurance to have a great amount that can put into

an eco-bag.
AMA Computer College Santa Cruz Campus

According to Muralla (2007) suitability is the quality of having the

properties that is right for specific purposes. It is convenient and has a quality

of being useful.

According to Ambrosio (2009) defined suitability as the amplitude of

the degree of being compatible and suit to use.

A situation that an investment strategy meets the objectives and

means of an investor, in most parts of the world financial professionals have a

duty to take steps that ensure that an investment is suitable for a client.

These readings are related to the present study since suitability is used

in the study.

According to Cupertino (2010) texture is the deposition or connection

of threads, filaments, or other slender bodies, interwoven; as the texture of

cloth or of a spider’s web.

The strive and the acceptance of a product is due to the promotion of

its texture, stated by France De Guzman (2008)

According to Antoine, R. (2008) texture as the general quality and

structure of a material.

According to Falconieri (2007) stated that the texture is the

arrangement or characteristics of the constituent elements of anything as

regard surface appearance of tactile qualities.

The mentioned literature above is related to the present study in terms

of the physical design of the eco-bag.

Related Studies

According to Singha, R. (2010) emphasized that “the leaves of an

architectural built, which are upright and can grow up to 3 or 4 feet tall. The

fiber of this plant was once to make bowstrings.

According to Cobb, L.M. (2007) “The fibers of the leaves of this plant

were used to make bowstring in the ancient times. It will grow in the darkest

corners, but will do better with low to medium light. It can reach 5’ tall even

inside.

Plant in the Greenhouse Sanseviera trifasciata (2010) said that

“Sanseviera transciata has been an incredibly important plant used for

centuries to produce high quality cordage for making of baskets, bowstrings

and many other products.

Krochmal, C. (2012) implies that grown as houseplant, the snake

plants are actually quiet useful. Several species are used as a source of fiber.

The foliage is the source of a fiber. Which also used mostly for fishing lines,

fishing nets and bowstrings.

According to Nelson, J.S. (2010) that “the most common species of

Sanseviera trifasciata, a native of tropical Africa which yields a string plant

fiber once used to make bow strings for hunting. Its leaves are dark green

with light grayish green horizontal striping leaves. Leaves are two to three

inches wide and up to three feet tall. Some cultivars have white or yellow

variegation at the edges or tips of the levaes”.

Kanimozhi, M. (2011) states that “the fiber diameter determined using

scanning electron microscope ranged betwwen 112um – 118um with the

average of 120um. Sanseviera trifasciata is finer than other leaf fiber”.

The following literature

According to Fiscal, R. R., & Dandan, K. B. V. (2013) Base on the

sensory evaluation, the study revealed that 75% corn husks and 25% snake

plant fibers was the most acceptable among all the treatments. The color of

the paper is significantly different with each other as evaluated by the three

categories of respondents. The level of acceptability of corn husks and snake

plant fibers as raw materials for making paper is significantly different

regarding texture, color, and thickness.

Moreover, Ververis et al. (2010) reported that softwoods or the non-

timber like snake plant with longer fibers have high paper strength. Sankar

(2014) reported that snake plant was composed of long fibers, and that is the

reason why this combination has higher tensile index compared to raw

materials alone. Kanimozhi (2011) indicated that the natural cellulose of

snake plant fibers has real strength in which it cannot be easily damaged

On the other hand, Kant, R., & Alagh, P. (2013) revealed that

“Sansevieria Trifasciata fiber is one such lignocellulosic fiber that has

likelihood for use in textile industry. It can be extracted from the leaves of

Sansevieria Trifasciata Plant by various methods, one of them being water

retting”. In this study the extracted fiber was examined for its diameter,

fineness, tensile strength and elongation in the laboratory of Northern India

Textile Research Association as indicated in ASTM. The diameter of the fiber

was found to be 50.76 microns with a fineness of 19.45 denier. The tensile

strength and elongation of the fiber were found to be 5.97 gm/denier and 3.27

%. There is a possibility of favorably enhancing these properties through

various techniques of mixing and green application processes.

Azur and Angway (2011) the natural fiber made from snake plant is

comparable to commercial textiles because the elongation limit and strength

are almost in the same range as that of commercial fibers, even better than

cotton in terms of elongation limit. They recommended that the government

invest on further research and development of snake plant as a natural fiber

source. Aside from textile production, the students suggested medical

application for the fibers as thread for surgical operations because it can

easily degrade within the body.

In the study of Rwawiire, S., & Tomkova, B. (2015) their findings

showed that the fiber has an irregular cross-sectional shape with lumens in

the center, the fiber diameter was between 80 and 120 mu m. TGA tests

showed that the fiber is stable below 200 degrees C with maximum cellulose

decomposition temperature of 315 degrees C. DSC showed that the fiber's

crystallization temperature was 310.5 degrees C and lignin decomposition

temperature of 372.7 degrees C. The surface functional groups were majorly

of cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin in direct correlation with research

elsewhere on natural fibers.

Moreover, Thanesh et.al (2017) revealed that fiber-reinforced polymer

composites have played a dominant role for a longtime in a variety of

applications for their high specific strength and modulus. The fiber which

serves as a reinforcement in reinforced plastics may be synthetic or natural.

Natural fibers are not only strong and lightweight but also relatively very

cheap. The present work describes the development and characterization of a

new set of natural fiber based polymer composites consisting of sancevaria

trifasciata.

According to Astronomo and Oca (2008) conducted on experiment

about the fiber of Pineapple and the result is the eyes of the respondent was

highly in the appearance.

According to Cabantog, et.al (2007) stated that durability of the product

is important and 4 rated 60% in their survey for finished product.

The Cocomunity (2007) coconut fibers are superior to all others for this

purpose because they are very light and has the durability that a good

product must have.

Laguador and Lazaro (2007) found out that the respondents shown

acceptance on the texture of Pina Cloth because 90% of the respondent rated

it as excellence.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the discussion on the research methodology of

the study, the subjects, sampling technique, research instruments, procedure

and statistical treatment that will be used for accurate data analysis and

interpretation.

Research Design

The present study used an experimental method of research in

producing an eco-bag made up of snake plant fiber. This study made also of

the descriptive method of research through questionnaires in order to

determine the level of acceptability of the “Snake plant as Eco-bag” in terms

of appearance, durability, suitability and texture.

According to Calderon and Gonzales (1993), an experimental research

of variables to each other is studied. It was defined as a method or procedure

involving the control or manipulation of conditions for studying the relative

effects or various treatments applied to members of a sample and the same

treatment applied to the members of different samples.

Respondents of the Study

The researchers of this study used environment friendly materials, the

snake plant itself as the primarily material in the production of eco-bag. The
AMA Computer College Santa Cruz Campus
Senior High School Department

respondents of the study are the selected 30 respondents of Sta. Cruz,

Laguna which consist 15 Consumers and 15 Sellers that will help to give

rated to the said product.

Sampling Technique

Purposive sampling was employed by the researchers to find and

interview the prescribed number of population in different categories. The

purposive sampling relies on the judgment of the researcher when it comes to

selecting the respondents that are to be studied.

As rated by Straker (2011), purposive sampling starts with purpose in

mind and the sample is thus selected to include people of interest and

exclude those who do not suit the purpose. This method is popular with

newspaper and magazines which want to make a particular point. This is also

for marketing researchers who are seeking support for their product.

Research Procedure

The original title proposed by the researchers were checked, revised

and rechecked by the adviser to maintain the conformity on the subject of the

research.

The present study will be conducted due to shop work of the

researchers wherein snake plants is around. It will start in the preparation of

the materials needed in the construction of the eco-bags. Then it will be

followed by weaving the snake plant fiber strips through needle and threads.

During the evaluation of the project, the researchers will approach

thirty (30) respondents from different field and areas. At first, the researchers

will approach fifteen (15) sellers and ask them to evaluate the present study.

Then the researchers will approach fifteen (15) consumers of Sta. Cruz,

Laguna bearing the same purpose. After the evaluation of the respondents,

the questionnaires are collected; the data will be tallied, tabulated, statistically

analyzed and interpreted.

Table 5.Likert Scale (Weighted Mean)

Statistical Treatment of Data

The study utilizes the weighted mean to determine the level of

acceptability of “Snake plant as Eco-bag” in terms of appearance, durability,

suitability and texture.

The weighted mean is similar to an arithmetic mean (the most common

type of average), where instead of each of the data points contributing equally

to the final average, some data points contribute more than others. The notion

of weighted mean plays a role in descriptive statistics and also occurs in a

more general form in several other areas of mathematics

Standard deviation will be also used to have an enhanced idea on how

data entries vary from the mean. It is calculated as the square root of

variance. The more spread the data, the higher the deviation.

Because the researchers aim to determine the difference among the

rating of two (2) groups of respondents, ANOVA will be used.

The Weighted Mean has the following formula:

Σx
