Dear Evan Hansen set design research

set designer – David Korins

focus on projection – Peter Nigrini

Design process started with coming up with a visual style for how they to
present the information. Long before David Korins was going to design the set
there was a question of coming up with an overall style. Coming up with a
language for how image would be used and how it would move. Wanted it to
be abstract. Looking at art and other images helped capture the feeling of the
show. Major part of the set design is the images that are part of social media.

For the scene in Murphy’s living room, the way they manifested that onstage is
by using fragments of images the audience might believe are images someone
took of the Murphy’s Thanksgiving dinner. The set design is all made up of
fragments.

The set is made up of over 1000 images, each carefully processed and stitched
together into this sort of college that is the overall look for the show.
