Experiment no -1

Experiment name: Lay out plan of apparel manufacturing

lab

Introduction: Textile industries need to be well planned for

better outcome at every sector. Lay out plan is the first step for a
successful industries as well as for a experimental or learning
lab. Lay out plan plays an important roll of the outcome of a lab .
In apparel manufacturing lab we will learn how fabric is
manufactured. So for better learning we need a perfect layout
plan of apparel manufacturing lab.

Objective:
1. To know about the importance of lay out plan
2. To know about the name’s of the machine present in the lab
3. To know about the machine’s function

Theory: Lay out plan defined as the arrangement of something

plan wise . The lay out plan of apparel manufacturing I lab means
planning for the location of all machine.

Types of Layout
a. Product
b. Process
c. Fixed Position
d. Combined

a. Product layout(line Layout): The materials move form one

workstation to another sequentially without any backtracking or
deviation.
Advantage
1.Low material handling cost
2.Continuous work
3.Optimum floor space
Disadvantage
1.Initial cost is very high
2.Repetitive process

b. Process (functional)layout: In this type of layout machines of a

similar type are arranged together at one place.
Advantage
1.Low capital
2.Overhead cost are relatively low.
3.Effective supervision
Disadvantage
1.High material handling cost
2.Time lag is higher

c.Fixed (position) layout: Here, Major products being produced is fixed

at one location.
Advantage
1.Save cost, as customization is necessary
Disadvantage
1.Lengthy production period, heavy investment cost
2.Several operations are carried out continuously.

d. Combined layout: In many manufacturing units, several products

are produced in repeated numbers with no likelihood of continuous
production, combined layout is followed.

Apparatus:
• Measuring Tape
• Pencil
• Scale
• Erasure
Working Procedure:
• First of all we need to take measuring tape and pencil ,
scale , paper for measuring the length of different
derivatives .
• We have to measure the length and width of the room .
• Then we have to take the measurements of each and every
machines in the lab as a definite sequence .
• We have to take teachers sitting position’s measurements in
the lab along with the students sitting capacity .
• Now we have to draw layout of the total room with insides
machines and other derivatives

Machine list
Cutting section
1.Straight Knife cutting machine
Function: To cut the fabric as given shape

Sewing section:
2.Automatic shank button machine
Function : For attaching shank button on the apparel

3.Blind stitch sewing machine

Function : This machine is used for giving a stitch like invisible.
We can’t see the stitch in front side of the apparel .

4.Overlock sewing machine

Function : For giving a secure stitch each side of an apparel

5 Double needle chain stitch machine

Function: Double needle / twin needle is a needle with a single
shank and two shaft. The two needle shafts have an eye each
through which two threads are threaded. As you proceed with
the double stitching you will get two parallel rows on the face
of the fabric.

6.Two needle lock stitch machine

Function : The lock stitch uses two threads, an upper and
lower. Lock stitch is so named because the two thread, upper
and lower”, lock” (entwine) together in the hole in the fabric
which they pass through.

7.Bar tack sewing machine

Function: Bar tack machine is used where the garments in
high pressure such as belt loop, pocket corner, at the end of
zipper and in that place where more strength is required to
support extra load.

8.Plain sewing machine

Function: For lock stitches this machine used

9.Zig zag sewing machine

Function: Zig Zag Sewing Machine is single needle straight
stitch industrial sewing machine for sewing light to medium-
weight materials including cotton, knits, polyester, nylon,
sheer fabrics and denim.

10.Feed of the arm sewing machine

Function: For the formation of multithread chain stitch, two
threads that means one needle reaches to its lowest bottom
designation entering into the fabric with “needle thread”.
Then it stays a little upper. As a result a loop of needle thread
is formed

11.Button hole sewing machine

Function: Button hole sewing machine is used to make hole
of button of a apparel. Various types of button hole is formed
by the button hole machine. Apparel may contain one or more
button hole. The style of hole depends on the button.
Washing section
12 Sample washing machine
Function: To wash the sample that have been sew .

Finishing section
13. Garments hydro extractor
Function: This machine’s main function is to remove excess
water from the fabric.

14.Continuous fusing machine

Function: These systems operate by passing the garment
part, with its interlining placed on it, past a heat source and,
either simultaneously or subsequently, applying pressure.
Heat is provided

15.Iron Machine
Function : Ironing is the use of a machine, usually a heated
tool (an iron), to remove wrinkles from fabric. The heating
is commonly done to a temperature of 180–220 °Celsius,
depending on the fabric. Ironing works by loosening the
bonds between the long-chain polymer molecules in the
fibers of the material.

Precautions :
1 We have to be very careful when we are taking
measurements of different equipment of the lab
2. When we are inspecting an machine we should be careful
of touching or pressing any button in the machine .

Conclusions: Our lab teacher was very useful in this

experiment. Though it is online we haven’t got the real
chance to do this lab physically but in this circumstance our
teacher give us the best effort for giving us the right
instruction and information of this lab.
I hope that this lab will be very useful in our upcoming
career
